The Five Ws and H
« on: April 12, 2011, 01:25:44 PM »
So I'm trying to teach the 5 Ws and H to my 3rd-5th graders, and other than explaining to them the basics of it, I'm not sure how I can help then practice and use it.
I was trying to make a game for it, but does anyone have any ideas for a ppt game or something that will keep their interest?
Thank you for your help.

I adapted the 2nd lesson (part of the how are you folder  from Ben 1981.

"how you doing" - It includes the 5W+H. I used it yesterday with my after school high schoolers and worked well. Was a little difficult for them as they are quite low level

You could start by reading them a short story, then review the plot of the story by asking the 5Ws and H and writing them on the board. This will also help with reading comprehension.  You could also create a "Who Done It?" type of mystery/story and have the students figure it out by using the 5Ws and H. I hope this helps.

Can't find the owner of the attached powerpoint, but I used it the other day and it worked well.

Also tried the game at the link below. Their sentences made no sense but they thought it was fun anyway.

Worked great, they were engaged and had fun. Check it out!
