Well this certainly explains a few things. I just hope that when everything comes back online, my accounts are intact :S

Ahhhh, so that explains my card not working yesterday. Glad I had another card on hand! Hope it gets fixed by pay-day!

WOW!  The entire system is down??  I wonder if this will effect their data records.

I'm glad I didn't waste my time trying to go to the ATM this morning ...

I am very glad that my school made me open a bank account at Daegu Bank. Otherwise I would have been screwed this week!

I hope this gets resolved today. I had no idea it was such a major deal until I heard them talking about it on the news this morning on the way to work. Yesterday I went to use the ATM at around 5:30 and one of the workers told me to come back in one hour. needless to say, all night I couldn't use an atm or my debit card. Thankfully my nonghyup credit card was working fine.

This is the final straw for me. I had a Hana bank account for two years but when I started working at this school last July they told me I had to open a Nonghyup account in order to be paid. I've had nothing but problems with nonghyup since then. It took me several embarrassing situations before I was told that I cannot use my debit card every night between the hours of 12:00am and 2:00am because the bank is updating its systems. I've never heard of such a thing. To not have access to my money for two hours every night?! Ridiculous.

I'm going over to KB today.

i met a korean guy who was a programmer for a bank.  he was learning how to write the COBOL programming language.  all of the bank's software was in COBOL, which is really old, and they were updating it to C, which isn't what I would call cutting edge.

I'm sure its a similar situation at nonghyup, and probably other banks around the world, too.  i read an article a long time ago about old programmers coming out of retirement to maintain banking systems.  i guess some still use mainframes, which went out of style almost thirty years ago.

anyways, you're lucky that your bank went out on a weekday.  imagine being on vacation abroad, or even just in korea, and suddenly having no money.  like saturday night when you need to take out money for a cab.  a couple of years ago one of my friends' bank cards didn't work, she slept in mc donalds that night.

korea is a really safe place, why not just keep 300,000 in your wallet all the time?

or keep a stash at home?

It's a common thing in Korea for banks to go out of service for a period of like a day per month.  My banks, Hana and Shinhan, have the same system, and my card gets rejected on a given day of the month (unplanned) even though there's more than sufficient funds in the account.  Good luck!

My coteacher said that they "expect" to have everything running again by 3pm today... here's hoping that Korea does something when it says it will for once!
It would be nice to be able to buy dinner tonight. I don't think the 2,000 won in my wallet will get me very far!

Was wondering what was happening with my card! I know that it doesn't work at night from 11:30 ~ 12:30... But when it didn't work after school I was a little worried.

Guess it's a good idea to always keep money around at home for bank fails like this.

I'm glad I keep cash.  Banking in Korea seems incredibly unreliable, plus there's that bizarre thing of ATMs not working for a couple hours every night.

Does this mean that Nonghyup cards won't work in other machines?

Yeah, my wife and I went to KFC last night. They let us eat our dinner there, but kept the card. They kept trying the card, and we kept getting the text messages saying system failure or something like that. We tried to use our bank books even at other ATM's last night, no such luck. We thought we were the only ones that it was happening to. Glad we had a credit card from America to use. Unfortunately, we're gonna get another large fee tacked on it, just because it was not used in America. But, oh well. Better than them keeping our card.

I would open up an account w/another bank.  It's great to have your options open.

I remember something similar happened in 2009 during Lunar New Year when their system was down for three days due to "routine maintenance". I took this to mean they were all off in Jeju-do or Japan.
