This is kind of unbelievable to me.  Anyone know if this kind of thing happens often in Korea?  I can only imagine the panic and rioting that would happen in the US if something like this happened!  Definitely opening a KEB account ASAP and will be transferring my money there every time I get paid.  Don't trust a bank that has troubles like this.

Are the Koreans worried about this? I'm starting to fear for my million of won!

People have just begun to fuss about it in the office.
my co-workers have mentioned it, but mostly it's a passing comment. For my coworkers who use NH and for the Koreans I saw outside the branch earlier today, it seems to be more of an inconvenient joke than a true concern. For me that's a little strange, but their attitude is helping me not to worry about all my money in NH... as much....

NongHyup is a terrible bank.. Their online banking is poor. Now you can't even use their cards.. They should be giving people money for the inconvenience. You have to pay to use their cards outside of working hours. They close the bank at 4.30pm..

Pay to use their cards?  I don't have to pay to use my card.  There is a 500 won fee if I take money from an ATM more than 4 times a month - is that what you mean?  Other banks do that also.  I know Hana does and other friends have told me KEB does.

Not that I'm siding with NH either - I liked Hana a lot more.  But there are a ton of NH banks around my area now and very few of anyone else.

Update: according to a tip I got from a friend, bring your bankbook rather than your card when you go to the teller. I just went to the main branch here in Gokseong with my bankbook and was able to check my balance and withdraw money. It's mad inconvenient but that might be your best option until tomorrow.

Don't think I would use the word "common" but you'll probably hear something similar a few times a year.  Couple years ago my bank was updating some systems and closed for like 3 days.  They also gave a lot of warning (which I didn't understand at the time so I ignored it all), so it's a little different than the bank just crashing.  I found out when I was trying to take money out from the casino on a Friday night.  They were the ones to explain to me why I couldn't access my money and that I wouldn't be able to until sometime Monday.

Agreed it would never happen in the US.  If a bank didn't give people access to their money 24/7 there would be some problems.

Is it different if you use your card at an atm rather than a bankbook?  Like, if you want to use it outside banking hours?

Also... they don't ever charge you for using your card at a store, do they??

This is officially becoming the biggest headache ever. Too many people don't have any money at all and people need to buy food. Somebody should've warned me about this T___T

I went to a local branch today and I was told things should be working by tomorrow. They couldn't be more specific than that. I also asked if there were a lot of angry customers but the woman I talked to said most customers have been pretty understanding. I know that would NOT be the case if something like this happened at a bank back home.

Hmmmm, now it says this on the website:

타행 자동화기기에서 농협 현금카드 가래 가능(추후, 발생수수료 환급예정)

현금카드 소지 고객(본인)은 농협 영업점에서 예금 지급 가능

Which I used Google translate and got this:

Agricultural cash cards from other banks sputum automation equipment available (later, raised fees will be refunded)

Possession of cash card customers (you) can pay a deposit in the Agricultural Branch

So does this mean our cards are working again?

Huh, I stand corrected.  I never noticed this pattern to the fee I'm charged.  Hana would change 500 if you use it at an ATM over 4 times a month.  So I assumed NH was the same.

I have 1000won in my wallet...and 2 NH accounts.. >:(
Going to open KEB account tomorrow...time to follow the path of koreans..they have
an account with at least 3 different banks each!  :o

Do they really have accounts with as many as 3 banks???  I'm currently using WooriBank since it's close to my school.  I've been hearing about the NongHyup issues and just curious if this sort of thing happens often in Korea.

My coteacher mentioned it just in passing today that oh you might not beable to access your money for a day or two.  !?!?!  But she said it in such a nonchalant manner, I wouldn't be surprised if this is a regular occurence here.

Go to KEB, they have English speaker(s) in every branch as part of their training and the online banking is a breeze.

I definitely want to do this, but there's no KEB branch nearby, so most are closed by the time I get off work.  Does anyone know, are any KEB branches open later than 4:30, maybe in Itaewon?  Any idea about the hours?  Maybe I'll see if my school will let me take one "vacation" day during HS midterms a couple/few weeks from now for the sole purpose of getting a KEB account if I can't find a branch that's open a little later.

I've only had NH a few weeks, and I basically can't stand it so far.  The online banking is too frustrating since it can't be translated really.  I was also a little shocked at the fees it cost to wire a few 100k won home to my US account too (over 30k won?!  And that doesn't include the fee my US bank added on.  KEB is about 8k, right?).

Ooooh... how about transaction fees?  I notice I have to pay a fee not just when I transfer money to an account at another bank but sometimes to another NH bank account, but I haven't figured out when it charges me and when it doesn't.

It's such a pain, it makes me want to withdraw every cent and stuff it all under my floorboards.  >.<

I know there is a 1300 won fee to transfer money to a non-NH account. To an NH account, I don't know if there's a fee. Also, I believe there is a transfer fee after hours, just like with ATM transactions. A lot of these fees are universal across Korea, though. I asked my coteacher about it, and she just said it was totally normal.

The bank is still down in Anseong, with a nice little sign on the doors in Korean that says it should be fixed in "a few days."

If it was a banking problem that was this big, why was there no way to notify their customers? They've got our cell numbers cause I get texts from my bank for various things. You'd think that they would want to notify people, instead of letting us all try and use our cards, only to be frustrated to find out that we can't.

Yes, I know it was on the news and everything, but how many of us foreigners watch the Korean news in the morning? Wth, NH? I've never had a problem with this bank, but this is freakin' ridiculous.
