Glee Camp
« on: April 13, 2011, 09:53:34 am »
I had my students watch glee during my summer and winter camps last year and it was really successful. The advanced and intermediate level student watched the show with English subtitles, the low level students watched with Korean subtitles. The worksheets are used to make sure the students pay attention, help them understand the content of the show, and teach them more about the culture they see during the show. If you discuss the summary and cultural material with the kids before the show, and the questions and character identification after, the kids understand more and have more fun with it. The whole thing takes an hour and a half to 2 hours.

[Mod. Edit: I changed the title to indicate the level, and moved it to the Summer/Winter Camps board]

This is the WKST for episode 3 of Glee that I had my students do during my summer and winter camps last year. There is no wkst for episode 2, as I felt it was inappropriate to show my students. Again, the advanced and intermediate level student watched the show with English subtitles, the low level students watched with Korean subtitles.

Did your students understand the episode with the English subtitles? I'd like to do that - my students are smart and their level is relatively high, but I'm always afraid they will get bored if they don't have Korean subtitles.

This is the WKST for episode 4 of Glee that I had my students do during my summer and winter camps last year. Before I showed the the students the episode, I showed them the Single Ladies video, the SNL Single Ladies parody, and the Single Ladies flash mob in France. I explained what a parody was and what a flashmob is. Then a I showed a few videos of different flashmobs, including the glee ones done as advertising. The stidents really enjoyed it. Again, the advanced and intermediate level student watched the show with English subtitles, the low level students watched with Korean subtitles.

I also did a Glee lesson last week. I used Glee season 2 Episode 7: The substitute with Gwyneth Paltrow. I stopped the show 10 minutes before the end of the class and wrote down a list of things that are present in American High Schools:

After School Clubs
Sports (Not just P.E)
Cafeteria Food - Principal Sue(at the time) banned potato tots
Detention
Dress code: Clothes, hair, make-up, jewelry etc..

I asked the students to write 3-4 sentences about one of these topics in Korean High Schools. This week we had a full class discussion about the show. I had them tell me one thing from about each topic and when they couldn't come up with anything, I asked them to read out of their paper. Then, I collected the papers to read and provide feedbacks.

My high level students actually understood the English subtitles pretty well, some understood more than others of course, but for the most part they got it. Reading the summary with the kids before hand and asking them questions about it helps too, if they understand what is going to happen, they have an easier time of it. If you make answering the questions part of their exit card for the day, they are usually pretty engaged. As for the subtitle, here is a site that gives you detailed instructions on how to get subtitles for English shows and movies.

My students were massively shocked when they found out that Kurt was gay. I couldn't believe that they hadn't guessed. It was really interesting actually. My co-teacher who has also lived in America had no idea either.

sjounger - thanks for these!
I've started using them for my after school 'drama' (in the loosest term) class, and they are going down very well!
Do you have any more (after 6th episode) wksheets as the first bunch have been excellent? As a 30-something yr old teacher i can say i've not watched Glee and wasn't too sure what it was about, but it's fine for my middle school kids and i was wondering if you made anymore worksheets, or where you may have got them from if you didnt make them (as i'm not sure i'll watch the show aside from with my students - if you know what im saying!).

Thanks again though - these ones have been great!

English subtitles are super easy to find. Just type in 'Subtitles for Glee E...S...' and you'll get several websites with English. Spanish, etc. I got my Korean subtitles at http://subtitles.tistory.com/entry/Glee
