i have heard of cases where if you complain to your co-teacher about issues in the contract that they can suddenly change their mind about renewing your contract to begin with

I see GEPIK is still a circus show. I know how frustrating this issue must be. Fight them tooth and nail on it.

Yeah, I mean some of you guys haven't seen your families for so long. They should give you 14 days. 4 days may not even seem like a lot but it's the principle that matters as well. You signed a contract, and both you and the employer should abide by it.

These GEPIK coordinators lurk these pages too and are reading this thread no doubt. You (GEPIK coordinators) are some cowardly individuals and make Korea look like a third rate country with your actions. I'm being told Korea is number one etc....how? It certainly doesn't look like it with your actions. You guys know you're wrong and now we foreigners get labelled as troublemakers when it's your actions that are more retarded. Gimme a f- break.

I can see the logic in it.  I always assume a contract to be good for the year it was signed in.  Hence, I always take all the vacation that same year and not wait for it to roll over to the next when you would be signing another new contract.  Its a take it or lose it situation.  I take it!!

Yeah... but our contracts specifically say that the renewal leave must be taken during the NEW contract, and not the current one. The 14 day renewal leave is attached to the first contract so it should be honored even though it is contingent upon your signing the new contract.

Labor board, people!! (Although I understand if people are wary of damaging relationships with their schools...).

Devanna...they're supposed to give you 14 days TOGETHER, not separately. But I guess if you're cool with it, then that's alright.

Honestly, GEPIK lacked the foresight to PLAN for the NET program accordingly, with there being no more Saturdays. I dunno if I'm surprised or not, given how stuff changes last minute schools. I'm not renewing, but you guys should go to the labour board with this nonsense and at least try. Yeah yeah, it's not good to stir up the hornet's nest, but they're straight up not following the contract.

i'm totes okay with getting the 14days separately, i'm thinking one week attached to my winter leave and one week attached to my summer leave. i'm going to ask them when i book my flight home next month about it. it's just really hard for them to give me a full two weeks off with my after school schedule. they're being amazingly lenient with me and bending to my 'demands'.

They're being amazingly lenient and bending to your 'demands'... because they know they can screw you out of a week's leave if you split it. You will find you have 'lost' the deferred week because it was not used within six months (or the next vacation period) of the start of the renewed contract.
The Ks once gave me five minutes notice. I didn't know what to do with the extra time.

These GEPIK coordinators lurk these pages too and are reading this thread no doubt. You (GEPIK coordinators) are some cowardly individuals and make Korea look like a third rate country with your actions.

GEPIK, EPIC, etc. coordinators have to look after themselves too.  I mean they have to cover their arses at the both ends, from you and the idiot POE people.  Thus, they're mostly nothing more than messengers of bad news.  Coordinators don't have any power or authority to do anything.

Yeah sorry, I had some pent up anger about the way some things are done here. But they should fight more for this, instead of causing this frustration.

YEah you have to be careful about this, and make sure they understand that you have almost 6 weeks of vacation. Your renewal vacay is supposed to be an ADDITIONAL 14 day vacation that's on top of the 4 weeks you get in total. It has to be taken within 6 months. You have to make sure the school understands that you're splitting your renewal vacation to your winter break, so you should get close to 3 weeks of vacation in summer and winter and not 3 weeks in summer and only 2 in winter. They might just 'think' that you're foregoing your regular vacation of one week.

Have any GEPIK NETs had any success arguing this point? It'd be helpful for those of us with renewals still coming up if we could point to other people whose schools honored the original contract and gave the 14 days' renewal.

I had an issue when I re-signed my 2012-2013 contract regarding salary increases and the answer may be applicable to this situation as well. My original contract was 2011-2012 contract and the renewal contract is my 2012-2013 contract. While the original contract (2011-2012) gave someone renewing the contract a pay increase for the year of 2011-2012, the renewal contract 2012-2013 did not. Since the 2011-2012 contract was not my renewal contract, the renewal portion didn't have anything to do with me. The renewal portion of the contract I chose to sign (2012-2013) were the terms I agreed to follow which unfortunately included not getting a pay increase. I was fortunate that renewal vacation days for the 2012-2013 contract were still 14 days, but will not be so lucky for 2013-2014.

My understanding is that GEPIK considers the renewal contract and terms to be the new contract you sign, not the previous contract since the renewal terms did not apply to you for the year designated in the contract. It sucks, but it sounds like the renewal terms will be for the 2013-2014 contract, which will include 10 days renewal vacation time instead of 14.

14 was barely enough to get over jet lag, have some quality time with the family, and return. I can't imagine only being allowed 10 days to travel around the world and see my family after a year.  :-[
