I work at a boys high school.  We always have two sorts of protein (tofu and meat, meat and meat, fish and meat) everyday.  Today was shrimp cutlets, gam-ja tang, and fresh pineapple plus the random side dishes.  Last Friday we had fried chicken that was better than most delivery places offer.  Once a week we get yogurt, fruit, or bread with jam, etc.

The best part?  I don't have to pay for lunch because I'm the foreign teacher!

My school is stepping up their game a bit lately.

Mine was better today.

Some type of crunchy, sesame-seed covered Chinese chicken. It was good. I'm happy today.

So-so today

Sundae with a bit of vegetables and fish cakes in a bit of pepper sauce (big surprise on something being covered in pepper sauce)
Kimchi (pieces of some kind of dark green leaf, looks like cabbage but darker and nut crunchy)
Beef and Radish soup with more beef than usual (usually it's just a few flecks)
Rice
Gim
Pineapple
C is for cookie, that's good enough for me.

Does anyone else get this random mountain herb on a weekly basis? I usually chow down without complaints for most Korean food but this is absolutely disgusting. In mu-chim form.

Anyway, was pretty decent today:
Purple rice
deokbokki
thick slices of fish (mini steaks) battered lightly and covered in that thick chicken-hof soy sauce
above herb
cabbage salad (all day, every day. I think the kitchen has a year's surplus or something)
radish kimchi

Spooned the smallest amount of rice I could, then piled on the deokbokki. One serving of carbs is enough thanks.

Ugh.  It's probably not that bad objectively (quite a few like it, but I dislike it).

-Bibimbap (I'll never understand why slivers of over cooked vegetables, white rice and pepper paste mixed into mush is considered good)
-Julienned radish kimchi.
-Doenjang soup with mushrooms and tofu
-Sweet chips (unsalted flour tortilla chips with raisins and dried out strawberry jam on top)
C is for cookie, that's good enough for me.

Today: fried fish that wasn't double-dipped in grease. What a blessing, there must be a god...

Not that bad when it's done properly. 4-5 different veges, sunny side up egg (hahahaha) with some beef mince (HAHAHAHAHA) and gochujang to colour it (not to blow your head off). I've found even the ones you get in decent restaurants don't match up to something homemade. Great lazy lunch/dinner food if you happen to have leftover side dishes as gifts from coworkers and such, or if you... made your own .

And then mixed up with chilli sauce for "taste."

Justanotherwaygook is right. The reason people like it is the reason people like spicy food in general. There's something addictive in it. For some reason, people keep eating chillis even though it actually feels like pain (burning sensation) to eat them.

I've always thought that a Mexican fusion bibimbap would be the way to go. Instead of plain mince and separate same as every other dish chilli sauce, a bit of a chill con carne and instead of random grass or flavourless leaves, whack in a bit of avocado and people from LA could even add cilantro. I know bibimbap traditionalists would throw a fit over that but if Koreans are prepared to put sweet potato on pizza, the rest of the world can do what it wants with bibimbap.

For me it's a dish with potential that hasn't been fully realised yet. That being said, I do like the ones that arrive in the super heated bowls which bake the rice to the bottom after you stir it all together.
In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

We are not "guests" in Korea. Korea didn't invite us over for Pimms in the garden. We are paid employees.

This week has been odd. Usually I just eat rice and at least once a week there is something else that is good. However, everyday this week has had at least one delicious thing! I've had cheese cutlets, fried sweet potatoes, fresh fruits and veggies and chicken soup! It has been awesome but at the same time I am worried because maybe they are prepping me for a week of disgustingness!

My school is continually getting better
Good chicken soup with lots of meat
White rice
Cut up sheets of dried anchovies in gochujang-corn syrup sauce
Rubbery 'omelette' with ketchup
Radish kimchi

And then mixed up with chilli sauce for "taste."

I think raw gochujang is a pretty lame seasoning, but that's just me.  Most of it is not even that spicy.

As for your idea, there already exists build-your-own bibimbap in the US, with things like avocado etc.

*I also had chicken soup today. FULL of chicken. Not tasty but very nutritious.
*Greasy fish that's been sitting in grease (still nutritious)

Good day for my body.

My school is seriously getting better and better  :)

Fried fish in yangnyeom sauce and it wasn't greasy (like the spicy-sweet sauce you can get on fried chicken)
Sauteed julienned potatoes with onions and some sweet peppers (not too salty or oily, just right)
White rice
Standard factory kimchi
Standard bean paste soup
Orange wedges (tons of them, we're usually limited to 2 pieces, but today they had a bucket load for us to take from)
C is for cookie, that's good enough for me.

My lunch was horrible.
*Tasteless staple -- Rice
*Slaughtered Cabbage -- Kimchi
*Death by soup -- Salty soup with a few pieces of tasteless shrimp floating around in it that was so hot I had to wait 10 minutes to begin to sip on it. Gotta get my salt intake for the day.
*Fake, chewy pasta -- tteokbogi

Why can I not stop reading this thread???
I ate an egg salad sandwich today from the uni family mart and it was surprisingly decent.

Really? No sweet stuff in there? I find sandwich makers in Korea can't resist the urge to put a sweet pickle in any sandwich. I suppose it must be to someone's taste if they do it.

Are those lotus roots in soy sauce good for your health? (Apart from the soy sauce obviously).
Because I find them quite delicious

Ooooh today was great!

"California roll" (Inside out kimbap with cabbage salad, yellow pickled radish and imitation crab meat.) with avocado substituted by a nice thick slathering of mayonnaise. I had two and left the rest, felt like a thickshake in my stomach.
Spicy stir fried udon noodles (yay, carb #2!)
유부초밥 skin soup
Cabbage Salad (as if the salad in the roll wasn't enough. Here have some more.)
Pickles
Radish Kimchi

Yeah. Great.
