Opposites

Hello!

This is my first post, so I hope you find it useful.
I teach low level Middle School students, so this may be a little easy for higher levels!
It includes a powerpoint to review/learn vocabulary, a matching game (print off the opposite adjectives, I laminated them, but it isn't necessary), and a listening activity. I used Katy Perry "Hot n Cold," and the students had to fill in the missing opposite words. The song is rather fast, but the video is amusing and they liked the song!
This was a fun lesson and the students were enthusiastic about the pictures and different activities.

First, ask the students if they know what opposite means. Give a few easy examples (yes-no, hello-godbye, etc...).
Start by showing the powerpoint. It has a picture and a word (Tall, long). Ask the students if they know what the opposite is, show the next slide, which has short and tall with pictures to compare. Keep going until all of the opposites have been shown.
Next, you need the printed opposite adjectives(just one of each opposite, ex: black OR white). I laminated mine and stuck magnets on them so they stuck to the white board, but this isn't necessary. Have the students queue up in teams with one board marker.
Explain that you will post a word on the board and one person from the team has to write the opposite of that word on the board. Spelling counts, and the students should take turns writing the answer on the board.
Go through until all words have been shown. Give the fastest team a point for each word.

Finally, the listening portion of the lesson.
Give each group a sheet with the lyrics to the song "Hot n Cold" by Katy Perry and explain that they need to listen for the missing opposite words.
Play the song let the students know when they should listen carefully!

I played the song maybe 3 times. Some groups were very successful, but I helped others out.

This is awesome, because I did pretty much the same lesson! It was great, although the song drove me crazy after awhile. They really enjoyed watching the video and I even asked them some questions about it.

Sounds like a really fun lesson plan, unfortunately my HS girls will really want to know what "PMS like a b****" means and I'm not gonna go there....

This looks awesome! i really want to try it! i am so out of ideas for my kids who are not enthusiastic about anything.... When i tried to open the file the writing came up in squares... i don't know if you have a new versin of word, but would it be possible to repost it all as a word 97 or 93 document? Thank you so much

I just opened it in OpenOffice, looks perfect.

Have you tried using OpenOffice?  It's available for free at www.openoffice.org

If you want to avoid the "B" word then youtube has plenty of clean versions out there.... and you can just skip the PMS description

Nice lesson.

I used the clean version of the song. Changed 'PMS' on the sheet to 'BMS' (Bad Mood Syndrome.)

There were a few questions about b**** and PMS from my 3rd grade students, but it wasn't really an issue. Good idea on using the clean version though!

Awesome lesson!! My low-level students were SO involved! (They actually asked me to wait on the powerpoint so they could look up the opposite word on their cellphone!).

I also did a game where I handed out words (sets of opposites) and told the students to find the person with the opposite word.

I did a lesson with opposites last year, and am using it again this year, and it is based off of my favorite game from my high school Spanish classes.  It's called the the Fly Swatter game, although I suppose their hands would work sufficiently.

Write ONE word from each opposite set onto the board randomly, some should be upside down, some should be diagonally written, etc.  You should cover the board with tons of words, my list has 60 opposite sets. 

Split the class into two teams and give each team a colored fly swatter, I picked some up from the local market for like 5oo won a piece.

One person from each team stands in the middle of the room and you read a word from your list that corresponds with a word on the board.  The students must race to find the word on the board and smack it with their fly swatter first.  So, for example I say "awake" the first student to slap "asleep" wins a point for their team.

While the game can get rowdy my students (and everyone I ever had Spanish class with) love it.  It's a good way to get the students up and moving.

When I did this lesson I had printed a bunch of opposites on paper and taped them on the walls, the kids had to run around and find all the pairs of opposites, if they got the wrong pair they had to find the team with the correct word and "rock paper scissors" for the winner, they received points for finding the most pairs.

The first time i tried it the kids went wild and were just grabbing anything...so the second time I made them run one at a time from their teams, when they picked two cards they could come back and let the next person go..that worked so much better. It was great fun!
