They are normal. In korea I had 6 root canals and crowns each costing about the same.

Your teeth aren't going to deteriorate that much in a year. The reason people seem to get more cavities here is K dentists seem to have a different definition of a cavity. I went from none in 22 years to 8 in 18 months. Seem likely? I was using my regular tooth paste as well.

I generally buy Close Up in Korea. It's exactly the same as back home, except is has a beautiful, generic Asian family smiling on the box instead of a beautiful, generic white family.

Not really concerned about the deterioration of my teeth
My teeth started to hurt after I changed toothpaste maybe a week ago. Just wanted to know what's a good toothpaste to use here?

I was using Sensodyne with an electric toothbrush,

Can't help you in Gangnam, but if you want to take a short ride up the three line to 연신내 I can recommend one for you.  Shoot me a PM if you strike out in your neck of the woods and I'll be happy to pass along her info...

My dentist quoted me 560,000 for a crown yesterday. The total for root canal surgery plus a crown is 690,000. Is this unreasonable? Everyone here seems to say that a crown should only cost 350,000 won. I don't want to get ripped off!

I got a good deal because I worked through a korean that knew the dentist.  He essentially didnt make any money off of my work...and didnt use any numbing medicine.....  To be honest, it is your decision.  Tell them you think that is a little pricy.

I paid 500,000 for a crown but the root canal is covered by the health insurance. Tbh I knew it was expensive but I hate dentists (leading to a bunch of problems from never going) but I like this one (I say 'like' in the sense that i'll go to this dentist) so i'm happy to pay.

My aim here was to get a brace but it is quite expensive and as i'm only here for one more year i'll probably get it at home for a similar price with a more lenient timeframe.

350k for a crown and 70k for a filling is normal. If you can get cheaper, that's great. But like one mentioned, you probably need to have the right connections for that. You can try to lower the price, but chances are they wont. Spoken from personal experience.

I already asked my dentist to lower the price. She wouldn't budge. She said the root canal is mostly covered by insurance, but I still have to pay 50,000 and then another 100,000 for "pulp treatment" or something like that. Was anyone's root canal treatment fully covered?

Maybe it's so expensive because the dentist office is quite fancy. If you're familiar with Anyang, the office is located at the very top of the AcroTower between Beomgye and Pyeongchon Stations.

I need root canals done on two teeth, so if I stick with this dentist that will be almost 1.4 million won! If I can get a crown for 350,000 or 400,000 instead of 560,000, I'll definitely go to another dentist and save myself 400,000 won. Does anyone have any recommendations for dentists in the Anyang area?

Although they got some negative pub recently on another forum, I can recommend New York Dental Clinic in Itaewon. I did some major crown work there in 2009 and 2010. I have had no problems with their work and everything has held up so far. I paid 320,000 for a gold crown. If you are paying anything more than that(unless it is for the higher end crowns), then you are paying too much. Oh,and root canals ARE covered by National Health Insurance here. The dentist told me that 75% of the cost is paid for by the insurance. I would highly suggest getting dental work done here in Korea because it will be double or triple the price if you want to do it back home. Same with eyeglasses or LASIK. Get it done here. Much cheaper.

If you do a search for 'dental insurance' you'll find information regarding this.

I actually did do a search first with "dental insurance" and then one with "dental coverage" but nothing came up. I can only assume it was a glitch with my computer or the system. Thanks for the redirect.

Oral surgery-wisdom teeth removed
« Reply #198 on: June 14, 2011, 06:10:46 pm »
Has anyone had any kind of oral surgery here? I'm having trouble with my wisdom teeth (never had them taken out) and I'm thinking I could get it done here. Any advice? Personal experience?

i had my wisdom teeth removed in the states and was put under and thank goodness for that! the pain of the following week was enough. however, i have had a terrible experience trying to get a cavity filled by a non-english speaking dentist. i found a+ dental in seoul, finally, and the englisspeaking dentist was nice enough to give me plenty of novacaine. i bet they could help you or at least get you to the right doctor. good luck! once they are out, life will be much easier!!!
