Bring an ipad from the US to Korea
« on: April 21, 2011, 09:01:48 pm »
Hi,

I'm going home to the US this summer and I'm thinking about buying a ipad while I'm there.    My question is if I bring this ipad with me to Korea will I be able to use it in Korea?

I don't see why not. The only issue could be 3g coverage, as that's on a per carrier basis. In the US, only AT&T offers the Ipad's 3G package, and I think in Korea only Olleh has the package. I would check with them over the usability, but wifi connection should work okay.

Unless they changed the way they do cell/wireless service, you'll have to pay some money to get it registered to use on the Korean network for 3G service. I believe the cost is about $300. If you just want to use WiFi, you'll have no problems.

I have an American Ipad without 3G (I hate paying monthly fees for 3G) and I find nothing wrong with using it here in Korea. I know nothing about 3G networks here in Korea, but just know you can enjoy your Ipad without 3G.Yes 3G is nice, but wifi is everywhere you go! How many coffee shops do you see on a daily basis? How many of them have wifi? I would think most! Of course this is based on where you live. I bought a wifi adapter for home (40,000won) and download liberally. I am not sure what you are planning on using your Ipad for (I use it for comics and books, no more overly priced English books for me!) so 3G may be important to you.

plus if you have an iphone in korea, or a similar smart phone, you can turn it into a wireless hotspot.

I had the first ipad (without 3G) here before it even came out in Korea. It worked fine with the wireless. There wasn't any kind of functionality problem. Though, I believe the iPad 2 will be out here in Korea before summer.

Everyone, thank you for your advice about bring an American ipad and using it in Korea.     Taking the best of the advice I've been offered, I do a bit more research, including comparing prices of ipads in Korea and the US.    ;)

We brought our iPad2 here from America and so far have had no problems... We plan on getting a smartphone and making it a wifi hotspot, but as far as places with a strong wifi connection it works just fine. Its not worth the extra $100 plus a 3G service plan to have the 3G when you can save yourself some money!!!! Think about it, that could be some extra money to go traveling!!!

I was thinking of doing the same but was wondering if the apple care plan would be honored in Korea should anything go wrong with the ipad?

You can buy an iPad in USA and bring it here. There is no difference between (I am referring to the same models. They sell different storage iPads) any iPad sold worldwide. A 64 gig iPad in USA is the same as an iPad in Korea, Germany, France, etc. They just change the settings and language. They are all made in China lol.You will have NO issue using the Wifi, but you cannot get 3g coverage here with it. You have to buy one from Olleh and have the plan through them. I have one from Korea with 3g coverage. I only have it, because a Korean friend bought it for his Dad with a 2 year 3g plan. His Dad decided he didn't want it, so he offered it to me for 30% off. It is like 55,000 won a month for 2 gig download + the cost of the iPad. It's the 64 bit iPad. I wouldn't buy it straight up. I think it's a bit too expensive, but I got a deal on it.

wow, thanks so much. i had about given up hope of registering my phone, considering i would have had to take a day from work and the cost was exorbitant. now i can trash my 바보-phone and get smart.
