I adapted this idea from an idea I saw in Dave's esl cafe, so I cannot take full credit. In period four, I like the sixth graders to use the key expressions in a less structured, more independent way. For "I'm stronger than you," I made cards that say the names of different characters on them, like a ninja, a tiger, a battleship, a chicken, Harry Potter, and myself. I drew two cards at random and asked the class who would win in a fight. Each team had to decide who would win, and tell me why using at least one comparative expression in their explanations. Most teams just said something like "a ninja is faster than a chicken," but a few teams gave more detailed and creative answers. Everybody paid attention and seemed to enjoy, which is significant in a sixth grade class
