Loved the game idea/competition previously posted. My 6th graders will love this.  They think they're too cool to do anything, unless it's personal competition & humor. I'll definitely be using this tomorrow! Thanks!

I've wanted to use the Daft Punk video for years but because they use the middle finger or barely have any clothes on I couldn't (6th graders being the way they are). Recently I found this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFZ-UBtbVs4&feature=related

They have all their clothes on and there's not a middle finger in sight.

hope this helps.

I've just taken Complex 303's bomb game and made the format a bit funkier.  Thanks for the content, Complex 303!

Game ideas for Grade 6 Unit 10: "I'm Stronger Than You", Lesson 2
« Reply #83 on: September 09, 2011, 11:58:43 am »
Here are a couple of ideas that worked really well for lesson 2 (listening and speaking) of this unit.

1. Line-up. Motivator and revision of vocabulary.

Split class into two teams. Get them to arrange themselves in height order as quickly as possible (award points to team that is faster). Then, starting from the tallest, get them to pass a ball down each line, saying "I'm taller than you", "Yes, you are taller than me" in turn. Teacher must check progress of each line and help if necessary. The team whose ball reaches the end of the line first wins. Repeat in opposite direction with "I'm shorter than you" etc.

2. Human Bingo. Language production game. Attached is the one I made, it worked pretty well (there are two bingo sheets on each).

Students have to mingle and fill out the blanks with the names of other students, to complete bingo lines. The more lines, the more points ( I did 1,2 or 3 lines = 1 point, 4 or 5 lines = 2 points, more than 5 lines =3 points). At the end students can read out the sentences and teacher can check.

Cheers!

A very brief PPT with stronger/faster questions. I threw SHINee in there, so the kids will probably go nuts.

PowerPoint and Board Game:
Here is a PowerPoint presentation for Grade 6, Lesson 10 and a board game called Snakes and Ladders that can be adapted for any lesson.  The rules are easy, so it's good for any level. After reviewing the PowerPoint pictures, I show the last slide, which has 6 pictures. There is one picture for each number on the die. To play simply role the die, move your piece, and speak the sentence that corresponds with the number that was rolled. If you land on a snakes head you get eaten and fall down. If you land at the bottom of a ladder you can climb up.

I see a whole lot of good ideas here. I have this adjoining area to the classroom that I *could* use for an active game, but I'm looking for something that would still require the kids to use English as they were active. I like the Bomb game but I'm not sure I completely understand the rules. I think I'm supposed to take up 20 minutes in whatever I do....did anyone try this game and found it took about that long?

I really like the first thing you posted! I have more space with my 6th graders than any other class and this will be a great way to use the space while getting them to use English! I'm definitely going to give your game a shot.

Lesson 10, Section 1.  Figured I'd contribute some work for a change.  I used a couple pictures and 1 slide from some other PP's in this thread.  Enjoy!

So...I wanted to do the "I'm taller than you game" with my 6th graders today. Unfortunately, I had a group of girls who were really conscious about their height (some didn't like that they were taller than the boys and thought they would get made fun of) and didn't at to mingle with the boys..... :-( Well I have time before I teach this to the other sections to revamp the game a little.

I just thought of this, too.  I thought about splitting them into 2 lines - girls and boys, but my co-teacher thinks the boys will be equally self-conscious about being shorter than their classmates.  I will try using age instead of height.  Then they have to ask each other when their birthdays are.  Or hair length!  That might be entertaining watching the boys try to line up.

I've started making short videos for my classes. I'm going to at least do 1 video per lesson. They're best used for motivation. Here are the two I've made for this lesson so far. I'm hoping to do one more next weekend before my classes finish the lesson. Enjoy! (Some edits might happen to the 2nd one)

We did a sort-of mini-Olympics in my classes. Here's what we did:

~Had the students put their desks in a U-Shape...the partners facing each other (you can see it in the pictures below)

~Performed various games to let the students earn points. I used a whistle to let the students know when to move on to the next person. On the whistle blow, the inner part of the U rotated, while the outer part stayed put
--Game 1 (I'm smarter than you) - Rock-Scissors-Paper - Each student played three times with their partner. Total opponents: 5; Total wins/loses: 15
--Game 2 (I'm stronger than you) - Thumb Wrestling - Each student played two times with their partner. Total opponents: 5; Total wins/loses: 10
--Game 3 (I'm faster than you) - Chopstick Pick-up - We used Omok stones and chopsticks and let the students race to see who put the stones in the cup the fastes. Each student played one time with their partner. Total opponents: 5; Total wins/loses: 5
(Ideally, the wins and loses should add up to 30, but some students do more or less so it might alter their scores)

~Students add up their wins and loses columns and those two numbers become their age (i.e. 15 wins and 11 loses = 1511 years old) - Then students ask their classmates about their age and find three people older than them. (This is just to let them practice more sentences...but this part doesn't actually calculate into the final score)

~To calculate the final score, students can do wins minus loses (Won - Lost = Final Score) and the student with the highest number is the ultimate winner.

I hope this is pretty clear. Obviously you can alter it anyway you want to! Just a base for your imagination to run wild!! Good luck! This chapter has the potential to be a lot of fun, so do it!!

Here is my ppt for the first period with a bunch of different comparatives.

Also here is a game where the students have to answer the question. Some are easy and some are difficult. I played this as a gambling game - after seeing the question the students were able to bet (up to a limit) points on the answer. If they were right they won that many points and if they were wrong they lost that many points. However, if you don't feel comfortable with gambling in class then I am sure you could use the quiz questions in some other way. This is a rowdy game and enthusiastic game!

Here is also another game I played. I gave each team the sentence cards cut up and they had to make as many valid sentences as possible using the comparitives. This is not a rowdy game.

Thank you, was getting stuck on what game to do for my grade 6 classes, they loved this game!

Here are a couple of ideas that worked really well for lesson 2 (listening and speaking) of this unit.

Cheers!

An excellent game! thank you! my students loved it and now i can use this game for other grades as well.

I'm nervous about tomorrow and doing this lesson. My kids seemed "too cool" for my introduction, but I hope I can reel them in with the line-up game (I think I will use age instead of height as you guys  mentioned) and I am thinking about using the video that was posted by Adam Thomas. It's hilarious! I think the kids will like it. It's less boring than the ones we have to watch from the book. I'm still looking for something that will get them to write though, so it's not all games in my section (or is that even a bad thing?)

lol I wanted to do Daft Hands for English Camp, but chickened out at the end.  I was sure my co-teacher would think it's too fast.  I'm also not sure if other teachers or parents would be very happy with the kids writing on their hands (I had a teacher scold me for that once as a kid).  Have you ever done this before?  If so, how did it go, and do you have any tips for making it work?
[/quote]

Watching some Daft Hands clips, I wonder if anyone has tried this with an exceptionally rowdy class?  Most of my classes are perfect and eager to learn.  But I have two 6th grade classes that I am sure everyone has experienced which are (ahem) little minions ;);).  Kidding (slightly!) But seriously, I have two classes where there are sets of students who refuse to behave.  Only strong scolding and denial or erasing of points make them stop talking for only a couple of minutes at a time.  I wonder if anyone has tried Daft Hands with this type of class.  Do they respond well to it or is it hard to get the instructions across well?
