Thanks Koradian! I tried doing it that way with my high school students first but as I suspected they couldn't sit through a 15 - 20 minute presentation without half of them falling asleep so I found it best to let them do the worksheet (in groups of 4) as they went along. Then review the answers and then play the bomb game. Only one class has come close to finishing the bomb game so it has been working out fine.

I tend to be very animated when giving examples and therefore find it easy to keep the attention of the students.... doesn't mean I enjoy it though! I can be pretty exhausted after a day of five classes (3 times a week  :()

I HEAVILY edited this PowerPoint and loaded it up with gif animations and videos. If anyone would like it, I can post it up later today. It'll be fairly sizable (roughly 70mb) though, so I guess I'll need up upload it elsewhere and put a link here.

If there's any interest, I will upload it.

This is my latest lesson in idioms/slang/stereotypes.

I tried to make something that my students would be able to relate to and also be inclined to used - the first lesson I posted was perhaps neither of these, for the most part.

So this is my "American slang and stereotypes in school" lesson.

I stole another poster's pptx design but made some modifications of my own to the slides and introduced minor animations with timing that I think helps with students' understanding. If that poster sees this, then please speak up. I believe in giving out credit where credit is due. The bomb game is the same as before with a change to colours and the locations of the bombs, thieves, and points.

1) Show the power point. Talk about it as you go. Stop every now and then to ask the students about the stereotypes. Who are the jocks? Who are the goths (hehe, no goths yet)? Who is the class clown? etc. 15 - 20 mins.

2) Give out the worksheet. Students do the worksheet in teams that they will later play the bomb game in. 5 - 10 mins

3) 5 mins a) Students pass the worksheet to an adjacent team. Read (or have the students read) the answers. Students grade each other's work.

3) b) The students are rewarded 5 points for every correct answer. They will start the bomb game with these points. There are 20 questions so the maximum number of starting points is 100. This works well because it means those teams that do the worksheet receive a head start for their "diligence."

5) Play the bomb game. 20 mins

Enjoy. It's been going well for me. If anyone makes any changes or improvements, please re-post it. If you notice any errors, let me know. I'm uploading the pptx and ppt files. The pptx version seems to be fine but the ppt version seems to move the boxes around and obscure the words a bit when viewed as a slideshow.

PS the lesson is quite easy and suited for low level high school or even middle school students

Hey all,
Many cheers to the OP for the lesson, it went over well with my very tired pre-midterm students. I also handed out the worksheet while I spoke (and docked people who slept/didn't fill it out with their partner -5pts in the game to follow). I gave one class a choice to keep the worksheet or have a minute or so to study than give it back to me. They liked that it made it harder for everyone so went with it from then on. It upped the challenge for the kids when we played the game. (I let them take the paper back after class if they wanted, so far out of 100+ kids, one has kept it haha). Just a head's up there are some typos/format errors depending on what edition of PP you are using.) And maybe it's just me, but I couldn't get the answer sheet to jive with the worksheet so here are the answers if you are reading the english side as you go down. 9, 2, 10, 12, 15, 11, 6, 14, 3, 1, 16, 4, 18, 8, 5, 7, 17, 13, 20, 19.
I should guiltily also admit that I made the prize today rice cookies, so that could also explain the great attention levels! (I get generous around exams...) Thanks again!!

You need to make more than 5 posts on waygooks before you will be able to download any lesson plans.

Thanks for the great package.  I haven't used it yet but did some alterations for my particular students and I added some pics so that I have a literal represention of the idiom and then show the actual meaning with another image.

I also changed the worksheet so that it is a matching exercise.

And I altered the game some.

As I said this was a great way for me to pull together what I need for my particular students so thanks again for the great material.

I'm attaching my versions fwiw.

Wow! I like what you've done with it. I wish I could use but I already taught my version and they're too similar. Maybe in a few months when the kids forget everything.  :D

Awesome! Kids seem to love this stuff - especially when you make a little effort to learn their Korea counterpart sayings too!

Thanks so much for your lesson.  It was just what I needed for my last week of classes.  I made some minor changes to the presentation powerpoint but totally changed the worksheet.  It's slide # 24 of the presentation and is a picture/definition matching activity.  The answers are on slide # 25.  I also changed the bomb game a bit and added photos.  So here are my files.

Happy Holidays!
