A motivation for the begining of the lesson.

Talk about what you did on your last vacation, every time you use a past tense verb the students have to stand up or sit down for every time they hear a past tense. If you don't stand up or sit down when a past tense word is said, you have to remain seated.

For example:

Last summer I went to Europe. My parents are from Europe. I like to visit the different countries. I visited family in Italy and ate a lot of good food. I saw an Italian show and I learned Italian. Next, I went swimming in the ocean in Greece and the water was very clear...etc.

Here is a review game of past tense verbs my co and I used for the class. The kids at my school are really high levels. So we made them chose a different person from their group to answer the questions for the different levels. Level 1 easy---Level 5 hard. They enjoyed the competition and would get points for correct answers.

"When She Loved Me"

When somebody loved me
Everything was beautiful
Every hour spent together
Lives within my heart

And when she was sad
I was there to dry her tears
And when she was happy so was I
When she loved me

Through the summer and the fall
We had each other that was all
Just she and I together
Like it was meant to be
And when she was lonely
I was there to comfort her
And I knew that she loved me

So the years went by
I stayed the same
But she began to drift away
I was left alone
Still I waited for the day
When she'd say
I will always love you

Lonely and forgotten
Never thought she'd look my way
And she smiled at me
And held me
Just like she used to do
Like she loved me
When she loved me

When somebody loved me
Everything was beautiful
Every hour spent together
Lives within my heart

When she loved me...

Even after doing this chapter, when I gave my class a homework assignment (what did you do for Chuseok?) they used the present tense in it, even though they knew the relevant forms of the past.  To focus on the past tense I played a memory game.
It's like the "yesterday, I went to the market and I bought..." except you describe a day.  So, teacher starts "yesterday I got up at 7am."  Next person must repeat this and add a line (yesterday I got up at 7am and I had breakfast at 8am), next person must repeat these two and add a line, and so on.  It gets hard really quickly.  Works OK for big groups as you can randomly select people and as long as they are paying attention people of a very low level can participate, especially if you have just covered the past tense.  You must be really insistent about correct use of the past tense or it's pointless.
It didn't really teach it or even practice it, just made them aware of the importance of using what they already knew.

Here's popular Korean game turned ESL...
You give the students a paperclip or something that can be flicked easily.
the question is "How was your vacation?" which is what the children ask each member after they land on a picture. the students have freedom to answer 'It was great, I (visited my grandparents)." or "It was not fun, I (visited my grandparents).... however they feel they want to answer. if they flick the paperclip off the page or off the table they have to pass. once they land on a picture they have to answer correctly or they loose their turn. the kids are really good with keeping each other in check. once they land on a picture they have to mark it as their territory. and if someone lands on that picture after you 'own it' they lose their turn. the person with the most territory in the end wins. :)

Here is a PPT I use to introduce the past tense. I've also attached a couple PPT's used to help the students review, they can be used in either the second or third period.

I would like to share all of my files for this lesson. I hope they can be used in some way for the 2012 school year. Included are the following:

-Vocabulary ppt (including spelling & past tense sentence practise)
-Period 2 review
-Period 3 review (tied into Look & Listen)
-Period 4 review
-Wheel Game (use with whiteboards; students choose 1 of 4 present/past groupings and if the wheel lands on their choice, they gain a point)

Modified Stand Up Game:
Three teams. Each team has a set of the picture cards. Each student has at least one of the picture card.s T will show the picture, and the student who has that card must stand up quickly and say the sentence. The first student to finish will gain a point for his/her team.

Directions
Teacher will ask.

“What did you do this summer?”

You will look at the picture.

Then say sentence quickly!

Hello Guys,

I was thinking about a game that I played with my 6th graders last semester. The game is called "move if" and you can modify the "move if" game according to whatever lesson you are teaching. For example when we are reviewing vocabulary related to the activities done during their vacation, the students can practice the vocabulary they have learned. Make sure all the students sit in a circle and the choose one person to be in the middle. Then the person in the middle has to ask a question. There will always be a person that does not have a seat. Everytime a person is in the middle they will get a dot. If they accumulate a total of three dots then that means they have to dance or sing. For example, the first person in the middle can be the teacher. The teacher can ask, move if you are a student. Every student will then move seats. The person that is left without a chair will definitely get a dot and be required to ask another question. For example for this lesson a question can be, "move if you traveled outside Seoul during your vacation time." My students really like playing this game.

Please don't hesitate to ask me if you have any questions.
G.
