Here is an updated "What's missing" vocab PPT using the images from the newer version of the 6th grade book.

*whoops, I left out "my" in "I visited my grandparents" on both slides.  Sorry I can't detach the file and re-upload.

My CT asked me to find a song about 'vacation'

I thought about using Summer Nights from Grease, but it is a little difficult for my students I think.

So, I made a video with the lyrics to Connie Francis' V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N song. Only problem is that there are no past tense verbs in the song...just spelling vacation.

Oh, and after I recorded the movie and moved it to iMovie, it cut off some of the lyrics. Not bad, they are just at the edge. I was too tired to rectify.

Hello.  I've decided to start sharing my materials on this site
because you people seem really cool an into teaching like me,
and I like getting your ideas and sharing my own.

1) I made a PPT to practice using words in PAST TENSE.

2) There is also a handout to go with the PPT
NOTE: Print the handout as both pages on one page
Then cut the pages in half so each student gets a nifty half page handout.

About the PPT:
First the students see an example of using the word in past tense,
then, there is another slide that allows them to make their own sentences using the word in past tense.

3) I also made a handout for the Game mentioned by a previous poster.

Pairwork activity:
Students write the numbers one through six on a sheet of paper.
Students take turns rolling a die.
Students read the target sentence for that number and erase that number from their sheet.
First student to erase all the numbers wins.
Students must make a sentence even if the number has already been erased.

HOPE THIS HELPS

This is a game, which I'll use in the 3rd period. It's a go fish game, based on pelmanisms, but a bit more fun.

Each group (4-6) will have a fishing rod, made from a pencil, string and a magnet.

There will be 2 sets of cards, verbs and nouns (red & black). Each ss will take turns to try and pick up the different cards (1 red and 1 black at a time). If they can make a sentence using the cards, then they can keep the cards. If not, they must put them back in to the pile with the other cards.

The words I use are based from the past tense ppt, which is made from someone else. I've also attached a ppt, to explain it to the ss.

 :)

Oh yeah, and the Rolling Roll story makes great use of past tense verbs as well as a far more interesting alternative to the textbook's story. Comes with a complete introduction describing present verbs and their past equivalents. Can't take credit for it, so thanks to whoever put it together in the first place.

Cool, idea.  This is much more fun than simply flipping cards over.  You can make a reusable version of this by making magnetic card sleeves that you can slip paper flash cards in and out of.  It's a couple hours of work, but they could be reused in lots of ways.   :P

I made this K-pop game for my grade 6s as a supplementary activity for the end of class, in case there was extra time. My goal was for them to have fun and practice/review past tenses (it's sometimes difficult to get them to participate in lessons.)

Students listen to the music clip and answer 3 questions:
1. What is the name of the singer?
2. What did you hear?
3. Change the sentence to past tense.

Just a heads up, I wrote out sentences without contractions. If you click the green box with the present tense sentence, it will reveal a red box with the sentence in past tense.

It was harder to find recent K-pop songs with simple, present tense sentences, but here are the ones I found (in order of appearance):
1. 2NE1 Can't Nobody
2. 2NE1 Lonely
3. FT Island Hello Hello
4. IU Good Day
5. MBLAQ Cry
6. Miss A Bad Girl, Good Girl
7. Secret Shy Boy
8. T-ara Roly Poly
9. Wonder Girls Nobody
10. Wonder Girls Tell Me

Thanks everyone for your help.  I teach this tomorrow morning.

The book's examples are a bit out there.  It is easy to talk about the weather, where they went, who they saw, what they did, if they liked their vacation as jumping off points to introduce the target sentences

Have the students get into groups.  One student says what they did during summer and then the next person has to say what the previous person/s did that summer, including his/hers/.  Its a memory game and so the last person has to remember what everyone did.  The best group will get points, or something.

An intro powerpoint, rules for a go fish game (I made the cards by hand so there's no template sorry), and two worksheets, one with a dialouge for look and listen.

For a warm up game I just put a bunch of present tense verbs into a paper cup. The students pull a verb and have to make a sentence in the past about their vacation. They get points for their team.
