This is a basic listening test that I used for the end of the chapter. Just read off the script and have the students circle the correct answer or fill in the blanks.

Perhaps somebody from a different background can assist me here. Personally, I feel "That's too bad." is too rigid and well... not too modern. As these are 6th graders, I often like to present them with one or two alternative options for them to use if they so desire, later in the unit.

I'm an Aussie, so my additions would be the obvious "Get well soon." and "Sorry to hear that." but also "That's no good!", the latter one being pretty localised I'm guessing.

As such, I'd love to hear what you personally would say in everyday English back home! I'm sure there's some great localised expressions going around.

was just trying to come up with a few alternatives myself and "sorry to hear that" was about the only non-colloquialism I could come up with.

I'd normally say something like: "that's a dose", "aaah, no way!?", or, of course "ah **** it"

Here's a basic powerpoint using the pictures at the back of the book.

I went through these pictures with the class and then played a ''Snatch Game'' for the 1st period. The class take out the picture cards at the back of their textbook (pg.183). Facing the cards upwards they must mix all the cards together.

They must now listen to the teacher who will say " He has an earache " or "She has a headache" etc. The student must find and snatch the two cards when they hear the direction given. The winner is the student with the most pairs! They really enjoyed it.

I would and have said both, but not exclusively - I'm a bit of a tramp when it comes to using expressions

Here are a couple PPT's I made for this chapter as well as a Hidden picture Game I made for period 1.  I made the writing activity for pd 4.  Period 5 storytime has some review as well as new words that are not mentioned in the textbook (you could introduce those words earlier if u want), and also includes a English Lotto Game.  Attatched is also a Pororo Game I used for pd 2.  Enjoy

Hey guys, here are the materials that I used for my last class.

SICKNESS Intro:
This PPT goes over the personal pronouns (I, you, he...), do vs. does, have vs. has, cold vs. a cold, sick vs. hurt(s), and a "game" review attached. As each slide came up, I explained it in English, so it required you to explain it as you go along. It's nothing special but my kids found it very helpful and they reacted well to it.

What is Wrong with her PPT:
Uses the pictures from "Look and Read" in the book and is a quick activity that requires the students to make a complete sentence.

GAME Telepathy:
No points added. I edited this PPT to include only simple phrases that we had went over in class. All of the phrases from the top of page 156 + I have a toothache. Fun game.

GAME Memory:
Simple phrases in the memory game. The last slide really grossed my kids out with the runny nose, lol! They loved this one the best. Memory games always go over well with my rugrats. :)

I hope this helps. Have a great day everyone.  8)

The lesson where the kids talk about what they want for Christmas got me thinking. So I made this as a culture lesson for talking about writing letters to Santa. It includes a template kids can use to write a simple letter to Santa in English.

I recommend passing out small, blank cards kids can write their letters on at the start as kids here don't seem to always bring paper to class. I did this in my classes today and the kids really seemed to have fun.

I made this last year, it's a game called Call The Doctor to practice telephone language.

I get one team of 5-6 students to sit up in front of the TV, they roll a dice and depending on what they roll they call one of six numbers, they then have to recite the dialogue that comes up.  Only one of the numbers gets through to the doctor, the others are all the same wrong number dialogue.  The idea is to get through to the doctor before the timer runs out and they die.

Better for the end of the second/fourth period, definitely not something you want to whip on them right at the start.

Also a ppt I made last year with various ailments.  The diarrhea one always gets a laugh.
I really liked the idea of this game, but just to get my kids really motivated I added an extra part. When they come to find the right doctor it is actually a KPop band that will save them. If they find it in time the will be directed to a convo with the band and get to hear a sound clip of their music.

The kids go wild for any KPop or celebrity, so I try to incorporate it into a lot of lessons.

In case there's a problem getting the sound to work I added the sound clips so you can reattach them.

Here is a little activity I worked up for this period.

Print out the included file.  Cut out the individual problems (last 3 pages) with each of the symptoms on them, but leave the first 6 pages (The doctor's notes) full.

Before you do the activity, teach some of the more difficult language.  Some important things would be to teach the doctors and what kinds of problems you would go to each of them with.  After teaching the vocab, choose 6 students to be doctors.  And give the problems to the other students.  They have to work out which doctor to go to.  They then read their symptoms to the doctor and the doctor tells them what their problem is.  They should report back to the teacher with their problem.  It worked quite well in my classes.

Modified the Hot Banana ppt to include the sound file "Banana Phone,"  as well as picture hints and the vocabulary answer after the Ss finish each dialogue.

My class is split in 6 groups, 4-5 Ss in each group.  Each group gets 2 bananas, one labeled 'A' and one 'B'.  As "Banana Phone" is playing, Ss pass the bananas in a circle, like hot potato.  When the music stops, the Ss with the bananas practice the dialogue, reading the appropriate role according to their labeled banana.  To stop the music, simply tap the touchscreen or press the down/right arrow key.

Enjoy!

We used Shel Silverstein's poem "Sick" for this lesson. The students liked it and learned a lot of new vocab.
The poem is in English and Korean.

Ok here is a great speaking activity that I came up with. I made about 15 paper cup and yarn telephones. Super cheap and easy to do. I was able to find my supplies in the school. (Remember making tin can telephones with string when you were a kid?)
My students had to practice the following dialoge with their partner. My students really enjoyed this. You could also have couple pairs come up and demonstrate for everyone. Encourage them with rewards.   ;)

Worksheet introducing Lesson 13.  Includes Vocabulary (spaces for English and Korean), word search, key sentences, and Listen and Speak "fill in the blanks".

It's a great paper to give students on the first lesson!

Enjoy!

If you are struggling to figure out what to do for the book in Period 1, here is a ppt to go along with Look & Listen and Listen & Repeat. It's a great way to assess how well the kids listened and goes over very well in grades 3-6. The first slide is s directions slide. I borrowed this template from Jacob Moer.

I also added a vocab and key sentences ppt.

Cheers!

Borrowed some images from aalbo's ppt.

Also includes a few review questions from chapter 11 and 12 to keep the students fresh.
