Hi,

I made this with the help of a PPT found on this site.  It's basically a matching/memory game which you can use as a warm up or wrap up.

Also, I made a translations game in which the students listen to teachers having a conversation.  NT assumes part B.  KT assumes part A and uses Korean only for the missing words.  Ss then translate Korean words into English.  My Ss wrote their answers on a template my co-teacher made but yours can write their answers in their notebooks or hand out strips of paper that they can stick in their books.

Ss thoroughly enjoyed both activities!!

I'm not sure if it's me, or the game, but I can't get the wheel to spin for the Lucky Wheel Game. It always says 50pts. Anyone else encounter this issue?

Here's a video courtesy of the British Council.  It makes for a good reading exercise and could also be accompanied with a worksheet with the key expressions/words missing.

Here is the video: http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/en/short-stories/im-too-ill

I like the Lucky Wheel game, but some of the animations are not connected correctly (you press the kitten and nothing happens).  Any ideas how to fix them?

I'm having the same problem and would like to know a solution.

It's probably because it was created using a different version of PowerPoint than what you're using.  It worked fine on my home computer (with 2007) but on my school computer (which has 2003) it was broken.

I see someone's modified it to work, but in case someone else's computer doesn't read it properly, all you have to do is highlight the picture, then click the link icon (it looks like a chain link) and then link it to whichever slide you want it to go to.

Perhaps somebody from a different background can assist me here. Personally, I feel "That's too bad." is too rigid and well... not too modern. As these are 6th graders, I often like to present them with one or two alternative options for them to use if they so desire, later in the unit.

I'm an Aussie, so my additions would be the obvious "Get well soon." and "Sorry to hear that." but also "That's no good!", the latter one being pretty localised I'm guessing.

As such, I'd love to hear what you personally would say in everyday English back home! I'm sure there's some great localised expressions going around.

I guess a lot of people would probably say "Oh, that sucks." But can't see myself teaching that.

Ye, I'm the same as the Aussie above. I like to try to mix it up a bit and teach relevant expressions such as 'get well soon' or, for example, A: I have a headache. B. I'm sorry to hear that. But my main co-teacher isn't too keen on me doing that and prefers sticking to...'that's too bad.'

One thing I've been debating with myself is the use of 'I have a stomachache' and 'I have an earache.' It sounds awkward to me and I would never use it. I would say 'I have a cough or a headache' but I would say 'my ear aches' or 'my stomach aches' as opposed to 'I have an earache.' Wondered what anyone else thought about this?

Also I've used one of Rufus's awesome ppt templates for use in this unit.

Here's a basic powerpoint using the pictures at the back of the book.

I went through these pictures with the class and then played a ''Snatch Game'' for the 1st period. The class take out the picture cards at the back of their textbook (pg.183). Facing the cards upwards they must mix all the cards together.

They must now listen to the teacher who will say " He has an earache " or "She has a headache" etc. The student must find and snatch the two cards when they hear the direction given. The winner is the student with the most pairs! They really enjoyed it.

I don't think I've ever said "My stomach/ear aches" but I've also never said "I have a stomach/earache." I'm most likely to say "I have a bad stomach" and "My ear hurts."

Practice material. :)
I used this before the "lucky wheel" game that I downloaded  on here from another person.
Probably best used in the 1st or 2nd class.

Hi everyone

I've found that about half my class is WAY behind the other half, so I have started creating some really easy worksheets and activities that they can do, while the others can go onto more complicated tasks.  This is the one I made for Lesson 13.

My coteacher and i plan to do a matching/telephone game. We're going to review the illnesses they've just learned and then give each student an envelope (big ones will have a pic of a Korean celebrity + sickness) the other smaller envelope will have the name + korean celeb pic. We have 30 in our classes, so 15 big/15 small envelopes. Students will have to find their celebrity by "calling" them to ask how they are (the dialogue is loosed adapted from one I found on here).

A: RIIIIING
B: _(famous person from the envelope)___ speaking.
A: (if it’s not the right famous person) Sorry, wrong number.

A: RIIIIING
B: (famous person) speaking.
A: (if it is the right person) Hi, how are you?
B: I don’t feel well.
A: Why?
B: Because, I have an ear ache.
A: That’s too bad.

once they find their matching celebrity, the pair will sit down to make a 'Get well soon' card for their sick celebrity. We'll give them 4 genereal phrases to choose from to write in their card 1)Get well soon 2)I hope you feel better 3) Don't worry, you'll be ok 4) Get some rest.

Hope someone else can use this! My CT made the celebrity cards with Korean software, so guessing you can open it.

We're had a lot of success with the match part of the game before because the kids have to keep using the target expressions...Hoping it goes over well this time too!

I’ve created my own PPT for after the Look and Listen. And I’ve also posted my lesson plan for period one. It contains questions I’m going to ask my students. I used and adapted earlier ideas so thank you everyone for posting them. I don’t know whether I’ll have time to fit everything in in one lesson but you can always use the Ailment Bingo in the next class.
