Hello, new teacher
« on: April 25, 2011, 10:54:38 AM »
I'm moving to Mokpo with my wife, a dog and two cats. I've never taught elementary school before, but here I go. We came in from Minnesota ten days ago, and after orientation I'm eager to get started.

I'm looking to pick up a guitar, a cell phone, and a new camera - preferably a DSLR. Any advice on where to shop would be appreciated.

For cellphones and cameras, go to Yongsan in seoul.  It is on line one and the jungang line near the center of north seoul.  They also sell instruments but I am sure you can get a better deal from an expat selling one.

Welcome,
Teaching Elementary School kids is awesome. I don't know what kind of guitar you are looking for but a few of my friends just bought a guitar a couple of weeks ago. They shelled out a fair amount for them, but they are happy with the deal they got. I will see if I can find out where they got them. Good luck!

I lived in Mokpo in 2008-09. I really enjoyed my year there. You should definitely take advantage of all the islands close by. Cheap and convenient. I really miss that about Mokpo.

Anyway, to answer your questions. I wouldn't go all the way to Seoul to get a cellphone. There are hundreds of cellphone shops in Mokpo. Practically on every corner. It's easy enough to get one there or possibly from another teacher who is leaving.

As for cameras, again I wouldn't go all the way to Seoul. There is a big electronics store just behind the Gwangju bus terminal. You can easily take the bus there from Mokpo in 45-50 minutes. That's where I got my camera.

Enjoy your time in Mokpo!
