ISP's Throttling Internet Speed
« on: April 25, 2011, 02:22:45 PM »
I usually get a download speed well in excess of 5 mbps. But last night (Sunday) it was suddenly impossible to get above 1mbps no matter what I did.

Does anyone know if ISP's in Korea throttle internet speeds for heavy users?

lucky you.  My download speed has been 35-300kbps since January.  It's ridiculous.  I called out my ISP and they said it was my laptop.........which is nonsense since my download speed at work is great!

I know what you mean, usually in the evenings my internet speed takes a dive. I am pretty sure I am not being throttled down due to usage since I haven't been using it that much. Mostly I have a feeling its due to peak usage and oversold bandwidth.

I can only get around 5mbps if there are lots of seeds on torrents. I often get a little lower than 1mbps.
This is my first year here and am not too sure about how fast it should be.

I pay like 20000 per month for the cable tv/cable internet connection.

At home, one needs to pay more for the faster connections, I'm guessing it's the same here?

Have I got one of the slower options?  :blank:

Gee. I really need to change my plan. I'm paying 38K a month for a 100Mb line. I don't need that because my wireless router is only rated at 48Mb or something anyway.

Your deal seems pretty good.

FYI: I'm paying 24000won a month for a 100Mb line. This is through SK Broadband.

Cheers. Better get on that. I'm getting ripped. I think I'm KT Olleh.

Well not if they've throttled me down to 1 mbps. Gonna have to get the Mrs to call them I think if its still only at 1mbps tonight. They have a cheaper option for a 50mbps line, I may as well get that if i'm being throttled.

I've noticed with KT Olleh if I go over 5mbps they just shut my internet off for a while. It takes a hard reset of the modem and router and about 10 minutes waiting to get it started again.

Actually on topic: OP, has this happened before with your connection? Or is this the first time in months or something? It's plausible that your building may have faulty wiring or construction related. If it's vdsl, then it'd be a shared connection amongst the units in the area. So if suddenly every one of your neighbors decided to scratch that Starcraft bug, it'd lower the collect bandwidth and hurt your torrenting. Conversely, if the lines in the building were poorly installed and possibly damaged, some isolated event may occur which hinders the connection. Ultimately, have them send out a technician to check the lines if you can't figure it out easily.

Sunday night, everyone is at home so more band width is being used.

He's right.  Other people in your building or neighborhood are online, probably downloading movies, and taking up bandwidth.
