Actual sports for winter camp
« on: November 29, 2011, 05:39:03 PM »
Hello, I was informed that I can have a few sports days during my 3 week winter camp. They obviously needed to be somewhat related to English (rules, history, commands). Anyone have ideas or materials? I was thinking kickball, but I would like some more ideas. I have found stuff on learning about different sports, but I'm interested in actually playing the sports.

Also, Does anyone have materials on a lesson about newspapers. Having groups make their own newspaper?

Hey there!
I got these files from this site awhile ago, and use them all the time. They're full of different games and sportsy games for the students. Hopefully some of them will be helpful.

While some of these ideas are not technically sports, in the internationally recognized sense, they will likely be a hit with your students.  There are always rhyming circle games that use various songs or rhymes in English.  Check out this and this.

I wanted to teach some of these games during camp but it does not look as though I will be able to use the gym during camp.  I really do not want the kids being any more wild in the classroom.  I am assuming your school is letting you use the gym.  How did you pitch the idea?

Hey!!

I made a lesson plan for a weekend thing I did to teach american football. It was geared toward 6th graders and I taught it in about 30-40 minutes. Then they took a quiz and we played!!

I'm thinking of teaching it for my winter camp too, just in the gym  8)

Hopefully this helps ^^

I taught sports in my English P.E. class for the past year and half.  I'd say it is really tough to teach rules because there is so much information and jargon.  The kids love playing though.

With that being said I encourage you to stick to sports they might already know how to play.  You or someone else said kickball which is a good start in my opinion.  Dodgeball/four square/soccer solid choices.  If you have field hockey stuff that works.

Keep an eye open, I've had a few fights in my time between competitive boys.
