Korean Police Check
« on: April 27, 2011, 04:57:39 PM »
Hi all,

I need to get a Korean police check to apply for a job back home. I was wondering whether anyone had any prior knowledge on the easiest way to get one please?

All help is appreciated!

I had to do this just last year. It's a painless process. You have to go to your local 'Gu" police station. This police station is the mail station for your area. I will be a bit larger and more offical looking than the smaller ones.

I recommend having you coteacher write down on a pieceof paper exactly what you need in Korean. Show this to the receptionist and he/she'll point you in the proper direction.

The process took all of 5 minutes and was provided at no charge.

Hope this helps!

It was the same for me last year. I was in and out of there quick!

Jenna,

As the other posters stated, the process is real quick and easy.

Your co-teacher can help you with the address (as stated). It's always the "main" police station in your city or town. I would suggest getting multiples since it is a free service (in the event you are requesting more than one copy of your FBI, or if it gets lost).

I printed off the fingerprint form from the Federal Bureau of Investigation site and had the police officers fill it in accordingly and stamp it with an official seal. Not sure what forms they have at the station or if it's valid.

Good Luck!

I did this and was amazed how easy it was. No long, drawn out proceedure. Might need the document they give you translated, but it sure comes in handy.

Don't worry. You won't need this document translated^^

Let me save you the trouble.

It's called 범죄경력회보서 in Korean.

I second what everyone else said about how easy (and free!!) it is to get. In fact, it's such a painless procedure that I wonder if this contributes to some Koreans underestimating how difficult it is to get the equivalent documents in most of our home countries.

I printed off the fingerprint form from the Federal Bureau of Investigation site ... Not sure what forms they have at the station or if it's valid.
I think the OP is asking about getting a KOREAN criminal background check for American/British/whatever employment, not an FBI check for Korean employment.

Is the process the same?

Is 범죄경력회보서 indeed the correct Korean request for getting a Korean criminal background check?

Is it, in fact, free to get a Korean criminal background check (not just fingerprinting to send back home)?

Is there an option to get the resulting report in English, or will it be in Korean?  If it is in Korean, where can the OP get a certified translation done afterward?

My husband has to do this soon for immigration purposes, so I'm very curious, myself!

As for the process, you can show up without an appointment and be in and out in 10 minutes!

범죄경력회보서 is indeed the correct translation.

It is infact free!

I highly doubt that 'Official English translation' is available. The form basically has your personal info. and a larger area that reads, "No criminal history".

I believe you can request to have it issued in English, although, going on my experience of most police officers I've dealt with here, you may have to make that request in Korean  ;D

There isn't a lot to translate. It's pretty much just the title of the document, your name and address and a box with "none" in it for the list of criminal offences.

The 범죄경력회보서 is all that you can get from the Korean police and I be surprised if it isn't sufficient. There is another, much more thorough check, that Korean PS teachers need to get but you can't ask for that yourself. It has to be requested by the employer and I think it's sent directly to them.

Can someone tell me which police station they went to? I went to my police station and they said they don't do background checks for foreigners, which couldn't be true if people on this board have received it.

Thanks.

In case it helps anyone else in this situation -if you have returned home and need a Criminal Background check from Korea, you can apply through your local embassy.

So,  I might need to get this for future teaching positions, but I'm confused about where to get the paperwork.  Home country or is Korean paperwork is okay?

Canadian immigration officials don't speak Korean.

Did you go to the main police station or a small one? If they said they don't do it, and it is the main district police station, then they are lying or don't know their own job. It happens a lot here. It happened to me when I wanted to get my fingerprints for my FBI CBC. The lady at the front desk couldn't understand why a Korean police officer would ever help a foreigner. Then her boss yelled at her and her attitude completely changed.  ;D
