UK vs US English. Intro activity and wordsearch.

20 pictures of items which are generally known by different names in the UK and US. I have 40 students, 2 to a desk so I print out each picture A4 and put one on each desk. Print out and cut up the names then hand one out to each student.  They have to stand up and try to find/guess the correct picture and sit at that desk.  Then run through the powerpoint eliciting the correct answers where possible.  I did that as part of one lesson and then did the wordsearch handout as a review in the next lesson. Just ran through the powerpoint again eliciting the vocab, they have to write it down to reinforce. Then get them to do the wordsearch, if you have a smartboard pull up an image of the handout on the screen and use whatever software you have that lets you write over it.  I did make an image which was better fitted to the screensize but I think I deleted it. Tell the students they have to find all 40 words as a class, and to come up when they find words and mark them off on the screen, ticking the relevant box as they find the words. You can call and repeat each word as it's crossed of, or periodically do a rundown of which words they're yet to find.

This material was originally meant for level six elementary school students as a side diversion to one of the lessons, but I thinkit is fairly multi-level because of the nature of the material. 

It is simply a basic PPT covering fifteen different vocabulary items along with a modified worksheet I snatched from another post on waygook.  Feel free to use it if you find it useful.

Your PPT worked as a good inspiration and template. I revamped it some and added a little. I geared it more towards US vs. UK English and not UK vs. US English. I made a second worksheet as well.

I threw mine together in an hour as a final ten minute segment of a lesson that the kids didn't find all that interesting, therefore I don't think it was that great to begin with.  Just functional, really.  In any case, you are most welcome.  Glad you could use it.

Word of warning for the worksheet 1 Damien created, Uk English also spells prize the same as the US, not 'Prise' as stated . Also, in the UK and Ireland we use the terms truck AND lorry, there is a technical difference between the 2 so be careful about that as well, in other words, change the slide!

One other thing - the 24hr clock is mostly used for timetables, not in general use.  There are people who would look at you gone out if you said 1800 rather than 6pm.

(It's more common to use it in France & Germany)
