Canada <-----------> Korea mail/parcels
« on: May 17, 2011, 04:48:41 pm »
I've been using Korea Post for nearly three years and today was the first time that a Post Office refused to ship a box home via surface mail. The office told me surface mail was no longer an option and airmail is now the only option. Has anyone else experienced this as well or is the office just trying to get some more money out of me?

I can't say if it has; however, it wouldn't surprise me if Canada Post complained to Korea Post about the (relatively) cheap cost to send a package from Korea to Canada and had them shut the service down.  It probably pisses Canada Post off to no end when they have to ship a package that cost 50 000 Won posted from Korea, but would have cost three times that much were it posted from Canada.  I really do hope we still can ship from Korea via surface mail.  I have five big boxes taped up and ready to go for the big move home.

I sent two large boxes to Canada on Saturday via surface, no problem.  If they canceled that service between Saturday and when you went... well damn  :o  I still have one more box to ship

Exactly. I've sent stuff via surface three years and no problem. That's why I'm so confused.

I'm also interested in knowing, so that I don't walk all the way down there with a 25 kg box only to be charged 150k. Anyone?

I think this thread, which I understand is about shipping to America, answers the question.  Yes, it appears that we can still ship surface mail to North America.

thanks.

but... not to sound pedantic, or ungrateful, the linked thread only has information from last year. this thread, about shipping to canada, is a little more recent so things could have changed in the interim.

sorry!

True, but on page three someone describes sending a big box home, yesterday, with no problems.

Just this afternoon I took a #6 and #5 box to the post office and shipped them surface mail to Canada.  The big box was almost 13kg and cost 36 000 Won; the smaller box weighed in at 8kg and cost 24 000 Won.  I had no problem mailing these.  The post office issued tracking numbers, too.  Just thought I'd update this for anyone still unsure about posting stuff to Canada.

In all honesty, to ship a box to Canada via express airmail is still cheaper than surface from Canada to here.  I've been here for over 3 years and the only way I ship here is by airmail.  I just like how it can get back home so much quicker.

There is the postal strike going on in Canada right now. That may have had some effect on the current mailing situation.

I went to post office yesterday to ask if they would ship a package to Canada and they said no. It's unfortunate because I only have one more week here and I wanted to mail my winter coat and boots. It's hard cramming all my stuff into my luggage as it is.

I went in the other day and they would not send my stuff. They said it was because of the strike.
