Books for Learning Korean (Self-Study)
« on: September 26, 2006, 02:11:06 pm »
Here are a few free online resources for learning Korean.  If you're serious about making progress in the language, I recommend browsing all of them to see what they have to offer.  [Edited 10/26/11 to remove dead links and to add others . . . there is a ton of online resources for learning Korean now, much more than the handful available when this was first posted in 2006]

*Sogang University Korean Program
*KBS Radio
*Korean Language, from Wikipedia
*Indiana University - basically an online textbook, dig around for intermediate-level stuff
* The University of Hawaii has resources online for beginners (part 1 and part 2), low-intermediate ( part 1 and part 2), and high-intermediate (high-intermediate learners.

I noticed one of the best resources was missing... try Songang's online site.  It goes from no Korean knowledge to intermediate.

I'll copy this here, its a list a kind person compiled on some other forums:

http://www.omniglot.com/writing/korean.htm <- this has lots of links at the bottom of the page ^^

http://korean.sogang.ac.kr/
http://www.learn-korean-now.com/

and if your korean is good enough, I think this is a short story compilation, not sure
http://www.hawaii.edu/asiaref/korea/SSIndex/ssmain.htm

I'd also add the following:
smart.fm
A very fancy full-featured online SRS-type site: a user has created a 400 word intro Korean set there.
Removed. The entire site has since been moved behind a monthly pay barrier and the user-generated content claimed under questionable licensing/ownership. Shame that.

And of course, Anki:
http://ichi2.net/anki/
Free downloadable SRS software, easily portable so you can make your own revision decks.

There is also

Some learn-Korean books are a tad too formal. Here's a great supplement to learn colloquial Korean:

For men seeking Korean women and vice versa, this could be a great way to be funny.

Thanks for all the great additions.  The original post was from 2006 and the edit from 2008, and there have been a ton more online resources made available since then.  I'll edit the original post to reflect some additions and subtractions.  With a few good sites---Sogang is a good one---and some Googling, you can find just about all you need online.

And for free.

안녕하세요 travelers...

I've value the effort to learn Korean by simply creating a lot of Korean friends. You'll often notice how the Korean advice and teaching are different...much like the variety of styles and techniques we use to teach English. Evidently, creating Korean friends is a great way to get culturally immersed.

Sun Hyunwoo is awesome. He was one of the guest speakers for our orientation back in August.

For a more technical approach to Korean, here is another good website:

http://korean.sogang.ac.kr/

This university is same school who releases the Korean textbooks the YMCA uses (at least here in Daegu)

I heard him speak at orientation too, so decided to check out his site.  While I appreciate the incredibly amount of time and thought he put into it, I find it a bit frustrating that each lesson is about 8 minutes long, but you are only learning one or two phrases.  I have found that most Korean classes go too fast, but Talk to Me in Korean is painfully slow, with a lot of chatter in between the two Korean speakers that don't contribute to the lessons :(

lingq.com added Korean texts and audios to their library this year.

lingq is a little different, but I've found it to be awesome at helping me learn languages in the intermediate level.
