International shipping to Korea, duty charge?
« on: March 04, 2011, 10:30:07 am »
Hello everyone, I am planning to buy a cell phone online shipped from America to Korea.  What kind of duty fees will I incur? The phone's value will be about 700 dollars

I think it would be cheaper to just buy a phone in Korea no? And I don't think you will be able to use an American phone on a Korean network.

I'm not sure of the duty costs but I'd imagine they would be high.  You could try sending it to your family first, have them open it and make it look less new, and then have them post it to Korea.  If you did this, you could avoid the duty.

The phone will NOT work here!

But to avoid duty fee's, you must ship to family, have them remove packaging and receipts.
Next, on the description, you must put "personal belongings".  You should do this for anything you send here to avoid such fee's and holdups in custom's.

@will141414 thanks for the advice, it is appreciated

Samsung Nexus S has 2100 HSDPA radio, which I am told is compatible with Korean 3g Networks

It was around 30% when I ordered something from the states.  There is a way around it though.  If you have the phone sent to your parents or a friend, have them open the package and then send it to you.  You won't be charged import tax because it is not coming directly from the company, new, and unopened.  Hope this helps!
