OK GO Music Video Lesson- This Too Shall Pass
« on: June 29, 2010, 12:21:39 pm »
I showed this video to some kids, and they loved it, so I decided to make a lesson about it. Unfortunately the lyrics aren't great for teachin' and the way he sings isn't clear at all... but it's the last two weeks after exams, so whatever I do isn't going to be all that educational. So here it is. Definitely a lot of things that could be improved with this, so feel free to make whatever changes you desire. (And you might want to change hell to heck)

The second screen and the last are embedded videos, hence the large file size. Took me forever to figure out how to do that.

The WS answers are on the second page, maybe you could mix them up and write them on the board or something. I was going to make another worksheet, but I didn't. There are plenty of things you could do with the video, like have them list what they see, or things that are happening in it.

I played a game with this song that the students were quite into. It's a bit unfocused, so best used when you have some time to fill/want to give them a treat, but still have some English in there. Show them the version of the video with the rube-goldberg machine, then talk briefly about it, the band, the concept of a rube-goldberg.

Then give each group (or individual student) a sheet of paper and show the video again. The students have to write down the English name for as many objects as possible that they see in the Rube-Goldberg machine (toy car, track, marble, CD, book, golpuh club, etc). Group with the most objects noted at the end win a prize.

I loved these ideas on OK Go and utilized them and my own to make this lesson. I was never able to give it a go with my class as every time I wanted to use it my class was cancelled. So, here's hoping someone else can try it. It would be a great after exams option as it's pretty laid back. You could definitely kick up aspects of this lesson like vocabulary (stop motion, film, creative, rube goldberg machine), expressions (based on lyrics), and listening (more so than at present), but this should get you started.

Part 1 - Warm-up with WTF? plus a behind the scenes movie that gives them a taste of OK Go (be careful to skip the f-bombs in the first two minutes of the HTF? video)
Part 2 - This Too Shall Pass Lyrics (thanks for the materials!) slightly changed and Music Video - there is a link in the PPT slide for the song to play (for listening). It's the small white box on the worksheet instructions slide
Part 3 - This Too Shall Pass Music Video challenge - list as many English words as you can.
Part 4 - OK Go Music Video Challenge - includes a pseudo game premises (I may advise changing it to fit your class' personality) with behind the scenes facts, questions, and music videos for students to enjoy. They certainly don't have to get through all of them by the end of the class. It's just more filler fun so they see what OK Go has created

The Rar file is too big for waygook. Download it here:

I hope someone is able to use this as I probably spent to much time on it. But, I can't help it. I like OK Go.

Hey Bets, I am really interested in your lesson ideas for this topic.
Do you have another link? this one can't be found. :(
