Travel Brochures/Vacation Lesson
« on: February 14, 2011, 08:27:23 am »
I use this lesson during camps but it could be done with a regular class in middle or high school (especially during these strange weeks in February)

I start with a powerpoint about vacations and I tell the students about a fake vacation I took to Seoul (see attachment).  I also made a rather pathetic travel brochure to show them detailing everything I did in Seoul...Then I tell them they are going to make a travel brochure like mine for a location of their choice.

Then I put them into groups and pass out the attached worksheet, which they have to complete and get corrected before I give them materials to make their brochure.  This allows for monitoring and more small group work with English (i.e. writing captions and an introduction).  I also open up the available places to go to anywhere, so many students chose places like space, the moon, a volcano.  Imagination works best in this scenario as inevitably some group will choose a real place they know nothing about  (Brazil for example) and then get stuck.  Encourage students to make up foods and hotels, the more creative the better.  You can give prizes for any number of topics.

Good luck

Hey there,

good job!

it's really kind of a straightforward and for the 10-15 minutes I basically have to teach after the book, this will be perfect to let them try to create!
