I just went through this thread and noticed Galaxy Quest had not been mentioned.

Galaxy Quest is one of the funniest PG movies ever made.

Also on the Recommended List:

Serenity or episodes of Firefly

Pleasantville - one of the best metaphors for American history ever made!

The Naked Gun (yes it's old but physical humor sells and slapstick is universally understood)

Legally Blonde - funny and light teen humor. Avoid the sequel as its terrible.

Almost Famous

for scary movies that aren't gory "The Others" is really solid and Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow" is a classic American folktale brought to life, which would also make a great film to show them what life was like a few hundred years ago in America.

Bringing Down the House - Queen Latifah wins forever

Inception
"If you want to change your direction. If your time of life is at hand. Well, then don't be the rule, be the exception. A good place to start is to stand. Just put one foot in front of the other." - Rankin Bass Santa Claus

How To Train Your Dragon was a huge success with my school. They liked it so much they stayed 15 minutes past the final after-school bell so they could see the end.

Here are the subtitles for Remember The Titans:

http://gom.gomtv.com/jmdb/view.html?intSeq=1803&preface=0&spage=1

Click download. Then you can simply drag the SMI file into the GOM player as you're playing the movie and they should pop up right away.

I think the link is dead, does anyone else have a link to good subtitles for Remember the Titans?
I found this movie and subtitles that worked perfectly, and my former CT "checked" it to make sure it was good, and even showed it to some of her classes. She didn't tell me there were any problems!
Then I showed it to one class today, and my new CT told me that in places the subtitles don't make any sense and at one point the subtitles say "We can't understand black people's English."

Why my first co-teacher didn't notice.... I suppose she just turned on the video and tuned it all out. :/
Anyway, I'll have to come up with something else for the class this afternoon, but my students still really liked the movie, so I'd like for them to finish it later in the semester with decent subtitles.

There are a couple sets of subs on cineaste.co.kr but I can't vouch for their authenticity.

If you search through their site itself, it asks you to log in. If you search through google and it links to the post itself where you download the file, it doesn't ask you to log in. But now, doing it that way results in an ad page showing up before the download starts.

Plus, I had failed at creating an account before...

cheers man, just tried your workaround and searching for "[movie name] cineaste.co.kr" and it seems to work well enough.

i also tried to create an account but failed the other day for some reason.

I have been showing them Deep Blue Sea--basically the Jaws remake, but with bigger sharks. This movie was rated R in the states, but it okay for 12 year old's here in Korea, go figure. I bought it off of Gmarket for 9,000 won. Surprisingly, they love it. SN: I have forgotten how cheesy 90's--in this case, late 90's movies are.

"site:cineaste.co.kr [movie name]" and if you want to include other sites, you can search "[movie name] 한글 한글 자막"

Just wanted to know if there were any new movies (2015-2017) that people have found to work well for their kids...I'm looking to make a lesson for my 3rd yr middle schoolers by either showing an American tv show or movie. TIA

I often don't have time for an entire movie for some of these filler lessons so I show a TV show.  Merlin episode 1 was a big hit at my girls school and random episodes of House were great for my boys school.  Be careful, episode 3 of season 1 has a couple hooking up in the first minute or so and my boys were REALLYYYYY bummed when I caught that fast and changed the episode. haha  But episode 1 is good.

At the end of the semester I normally take two periods to show a movie. Last semester I showed the recent Goosebumps movie (2015) with Jack Black and they actually loved it. The level of English is pretty basic too, but I still gave them subtitles.

I am planning to conduct a  film viewing activity for my Grade 8 pupils. Can you suggest good movies that will surely capture their interest?

Seconded!
I showed Galaxy Quest just before leaving a boys middle school.
Once they knew the basic concept (even with subs it takes a little while to grasp the actors-but-real-but-acting-but-now-for-real dynamic) they loved it.\

The Truman Show also plays v well & is just a world class movie, although again the opening stages are probably a little confusing/seemingly low-energy, if you go in blind.

Thanks, oglop. I'll check on that.
I'm also wondering if anyone of you has tried the  "Ransom of Red Chief"?
I'm thinking that they'll have a fun and busy time writing about it. What do you think?

I just showed Moana (for girls) and Dr.Strange (for boys).

Both a big hit.
