Clothing Lesson
« on: March 30, 2009, 08:36:58 AM »
I did this lesson last week with my after school 4, 5, & 6th graders. It's basic, but worked pretty well.

First, make sure students understand the meaning of the word "clothing." I just had my Korean co-teacher translate for me. Next, I introduced different clothing words, using real clothes my Korean co-teacher brought to class (you can also simply point to the clothes you and the students' are wearing, although this made some of my girls self-concious), and wrote the words on the board. When you feel they have sufficiently learned the words (my classes picked up on them fast), you can move on to the Shopping Game.

The Shopping Game works like this: Set up a "store" by laying the clothes out on a row of desks at the front of the room. I printed out American paper bills, and gave each student a $5 and $10 bill. One student acts as the shopkeeper, while other students act as the shoppers (the shopkeepers can switch roles at various points and become shoppers also). The shopper enters the store (try to have ONE student come at a time, otherwise all hell will break loose. I only allowed two to come at the same time if a student was particularly shy), chooses a piece of clothing to buy, the shopkeeper tells them how much it costs, the exchange is made, and the shopper exits the store. I wrote a pre-made dialogue on the board to help the students.

Shopkeeper: Hello!
Shopper: Hello!
SK: How may I help you?
S: I would like to buy the ________(shirt, miniskirt)
How much does it cost?
SK: It costs ______ ($10, $5, $20)
S: Thank you!
SK: Thank you! Have a nice day!

You can use this dialogue or something similar.

If you have extra time at the end of class (which I did), you can have them play pictionary on the board by drawing different clothing items and making the other students guess.

Hello! I created this worksheet when I was teaching a very low level grade 3 class a few years ago. I thought I'd share this with all of you.

Hope this help!

Relay races are a lot of fun too....

Teams form single file lines. Everyone faces the back of the room except the first person in line. He/she faces the teacher. The T shows a picture of an item of clothing. The Ss the whisper the item down the lines. The last person in line runs to put on that item of clothing. Rotate through.

Lesson 1: Let's Play Soccer song! Grade 3-4
« Reply #10 on: March 19, 2012, 10:34:00 AM »
I created this PPT using a song from the book "Surprise Surprise 2," and its CD- Track 10. It can be used to teach different clothing and implement some basic colors. Hope someone finds it useful! It can also be used as an independent PPT from the book.

I know this one looks like a lot, but by the end, a lot of kinder's could name most of the clothing you see on this power point.
Also, it's great for low level High School students.

Another way to use this idea of shopping and using bills would be to offer the bills as a reward for classroom behavior. Use a sticker system or something of that nature, but at the end of the month, allow students to use the money he or she earned in order purchase candy, memos, pencils, pens, stickers, etc.

It is a good tools because the more stickers a student earns fo good behavior and participation, the more money he or she will have to buy the items up for grabs.

Lesson on Colors and Clothes
« Reply #14 on: May 29, 2012, 02:26:46 PM »
This is a lesson built around the book, "Mary wore her red dress and henry wore his green sneakers."

1. Storybook ppt about clothes and colors
2. colors ppt (basic colors) with practice sentences
3. Clothes ppt
      ~Practice sentences
      ~ I am wearing...
      ~Listen and draw
      ~Bingo Game
4. Hidden pictures
5. "Lesson plan" listing activities.

It is not letting me attach the actual story though. You might be able to find it online or use another story.

Clothes / Colours lesson
« Reply #15 on: June 09, 2012, 07:49:36 AM »
Lesson on clothes and reinforcing colours. Used this with my elementary 2nd graders

Presented the powerpoint and had the students draw each clothing as we went on.

Ended the lesson by actually bringing in a whole heap of my clothes. split the class into two teams. We did a chinese whispers type game where i would whisper a type of clothing (eg. red t shirt) to a member from each team. They would then run to their team and whisper the message to the next member of their team. The first member of the line when they receive the message rushes up to the table and puts on the clothing.

Yet another clothing one. Basic vocabulary and a few activities asking "what is he wearing".

Used it for my afterschool elementary students. Worked well, though I wish I'd seen this post before that lesson.
