2014 Grade 3 Daekyo 1 - 8. What Color is It?

Some materials I created or borrowed and tweaked.

The Mario game, I just tweaked and it has some quirks, when you go to the "search" option the letters you've chosen return, so just keep track of the letters the students have chosen and you'll be fine.

Brown bear worksheet I made. I verbally say the colors and they color and then they label.

More materials...
Since we do role play during 3rd, these materials are follow-up to Winnie the Witch but you can do them as  preceding activity. The worksheet really needs to be in color if you're going to use since it asks them what color the items are, unless you print it in black and white and display the worksheet real big on the screen so they can answer the questions.

Here's a Ppt for practicing the dialogue used in Period 2 along with an Evolution Game at the end of the Ppt...These are materials from previous textbook book threads, which i've edited to suit this lesson.

Reaaaallly great color song I've used in the past. It only focuses on red, yellow, blue, and green, but it also uses the target language "What color is it?" "It's ____." The kids try to say it faster and faster to keep up with the song. It's a hit :)

I also used the Simon game. http://www.echalk.co.uk/amusements/Games/Simon/simon.html

Do it first as a class, with them helping you by saying the colors. Then let a student do it if you have a smart board (or on your computer if want to just let them use the mouse). Works nicely as a follow-up to the memory game played in the book.

Some worksheets I made for period 3.

"Color Writing Practice Worksheet."
[My school doesn't provide color printers, so I left the shapes blank and colored them in myself (there's no coloring supplies at my school either....). Feel free to change worksheet if you have access to more technology.]

"What Color Is It?" worksheet is writing practice.
[Found original worksheet on busy teacher, but changed to American English spellings and simplified the sentences.]

This chapter also introduces the 'f' and 'v' sounds. Since 'f' and 'v' take the same mouth shape, I had my students place their hands on their throat and feel the difference in pronunciation. (Vibration of vocal chords with the 'v' sound vs. no vibration with the 'f' sound.)

"What Sound Do You Hear?" worksheet focuses on listening. Has students differentiate between 'f' and 'v'. Page 1 is for the teacher. The second page is the handout to the students with the instructions for the activity.

"Vocabulary List" is a vocabulary list specifically focusing on 'f' and 'v' words with their corresponding pictures. I had the students take these home to study and keep. Will check spelling in next lesson. Will call out a word and have students spell it to verify 'f' and 'v' comprehension.

Word breakdown and Reading Race for period 3. Divide the class into two teams and make two lines facing the screen/board. The first person in each line has a die (better if you have big stuffed dice). They read the word that corresponds with the number on the die and go to the end of the line. The first team to go through their entire line twice is the winner. Make it so the teammates cannot talk, only the ones in front, otherwise it will be chaos and the students won't get a chance to struggle.

I mixed words from this chapter and the last chapter. It's best to review before the game and ask students which words they can't read.

Here is an exercise for sounds and letters. I usually sound the letter and students guess which letter begins the word.

F and V listening test.
My students are not strong enough to do the full word recognition like the other listening test posted, so in this one I will say some F and V words like: five, violin, face, vase etc...and they just circle if they heard F or V.
I did this last lesson for L and R and they felt pretty proud when they got a perfect score :)
Hope this helps someone.
Six test papers per page.

Game I came up with: chaotic but great fun!

The students work in pairs/teams (ppt instructions show teams of 4). Half the team is the "Color and Write" team and has a worksheet to fill in. The worksheet has 8 animals all of which need to be coloured in and the colour written underneath. The other half of the team is the Speaking team who run to the teacher, say "what colour is it?", and get shown a big picture of the coloured animal (fun teacher colouring in prep) and then run back to their team to give the right colour. Went down really well with my third graders while individuals were being taken out for mini tests with my co.

Answers then shown in the big pictures which can be stuck/clipped to the board. If the big animals are laminated, then each student group can write the colour on in board pen to show the writing answers. Laminated means rub-off-able for the next class.

The 8 animals are those which are sung about in the song "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see?" so crazy game leads them to a nice song at the end of the lesson.

Before the game, the students all need a pot of pens with each of the 7 colours in (no white obv). They make a game out of holding up the right pen for each of the words on the screen so you can check they have all the right colours and give out spare pens if not.

Thanks to OP for song and review section of the ppt.

Simple intro PPT and a crayon craft that they are meant to color their favorite color and write the name of the color in the blank space. I gave them two and had them glue them together so it had a back and front
And also a song that I use for this lesson

Here are some cute PPTs for period 1, 2 and 4.

Period 1 includes colour phonetics and a Bingo Game (see worksheet - they initially colour it in themselves and then if the colour matches the one on the PPT they can cross it out.  First to cross out 5 numbers wins)

Period 2 includes a colour recap and a 'Chicken & Egg' evolution game (see PPT for instructions).

Period 4 includes another colour recap and a 'Flying Colours' game (put Ss in groups then give each group a mini whiteboard.  When the colour flies past on the screen they should write it down.  First group to write it correctly gets 2 points, the other teams get 1 point.  Round 2 and 3 they must write down the word AND the colour of the font)

A circle game activity good for the first or second lesson (I'm going to use it for listening).  Students each get a card with a pokemon on it.  They sit in a circle and one person stands in the middle.  The person in the middle says, "Look at the pokemon!"  The students sitting say, "What color is it?"  The standing student says "It's ____."  Depending on what round you are doing it can be one of 3 colors (red, green, blue or yellow, orange, black).  They can say any color in that round (it doesn't have to be the color on their own card).  Once they say a color, the students with that color pokemon get up and run to an empty seat (the person standing also tries to get an empty seat).  Whoever is left standing is now the new person in the middle.

Attached is a PPT explaining the game.  The cards are on the last slide.  I have only 9 students so I did 3 cards for each color per round.
