Hi all,

I have attached my first lesson for this chapter. I used some slides from a previous poster. Thanks!
It is a very involved lesson that requires a lot of student participation. I have taught it twice and it went really really well both times ~~ my classes are pretty advanced.

The first slide is just a warm-up that i do at the beginning of every class. I give double-word points for any word containing the golden letter.

For the vocabulary portion, I ask the students to express the meaning of each word using their own english definitions. And then I give them a few minutes to complete the first part of the worksheet.

Next i go over the key expressions and tell them that i will explain them futher later.
After going through the examples, I ask for 3 students to give their own examples using each expression. I write them on the board and have the students recite them. They really enjoy being able to ask me questions and engage in conversation.

Finally, I have them complete the last part of the worksheet. I like to tell them to do one comic at a time so that we can go through examples in between. This lesson took exactly 45 minutes =)

hope this helps!

"You know _____, don't you?" Famous people Quiz
Using a PPT from another poster, but have changed it to suit the key expressions from Lesson 9.

I changed the white board game rules and added the speaking activities to my powerpoint.  Koreans tend to mix up he with she and him with her, so you have to try and drill it into their heads.  For the speaking some of the words fly up so that they get a chance to say the correct pronouns themselves rather than just reading out loud like they usually do.  I might make more speaking activities later in order to practice the gender pronouns more.

Thanks jlepeyman and lenaveronica for your materials!!  You had me covered for my first class for this lesson!  In this powerpoint I've included the speaking activities and the real life scene.  I've also included material for the chapter's song "Hello" by Lionel Richie.

I found a good worksheet on isl collective.  These are the instructions I am giving to the students: "Worksheet time!!!  LetÂ’s read the story about the Minotaur.  First, I will read it out loud to you.  Then I want you to read it by yourself.  Try to find the answers to the questions.  When I think you are ready I will ask the questions.  Please raise your hands.  If you answer the question correctly in a complete sentence I will give you a piece of candy."

niamh92smith, thank you for making such an awesome famous people ppt. I loved the idea so much that I made a set of famous people cards. I divide the class into groups of four and then handout the sets of cards. First person picks up a card and asks the player on thier left, "You know _____, don't you." If they can say "Yes, he's a famous ____." Then they can keep the card. If they don't know they must say, "I haven't got a clue." and the card goes to the bottom of the pile. Play until there are no cards left. It's a fairly simple game but it should be a good time filler if you need one.

Please note that I did not feel like explaining the difference between Prime Minister and President and so my cards have British and Canadian Presidents. Feel free to change this :)

I've updated my powerpoint for my second class for this lesson.  I've added a worksheet that I found in another forum on waygook.  For the worksheet activity I am going to leave the powerpoint on slide 19 and write on the board: A: When is your birthday?  B:  My birthday is (Month, Day).  They can then figure out their star sign and their classmates' star sign by looking at the powerpoint.  So basically the students have to get up and survey their classmates.  And they can read the descriptions of the star signs.  Hopefully it will be interesting to them.

This is for Speaking Part B. I couldn't find any relevant activities that really fit so I modified a Where's Waldo/Wally activity from a Detective Camp post and created a worksheet for it.

Hope you find this useful!  ;D

ETA: It should be self explanatory, but show PPT and have your students find the items/people on the worksheet.

Here's an activity for Speaking part B, dealing with present participle clauses. I cut up the 18 sentence pieces individually and gave a mixed-up set to every two students. I put the pictures on the screen and had the students race to put the correct sentence together.

This usually rowdy class was super focused and competitive today so they burned through it pretty quickly. I wish I'd made a more production-y activity to go after (maybe given them more random pictures and had them write sentences about them, or played a describe-and-guess game like Dixit).

Since I didn't do that, with the rest of class we just played the "Konglish" spelling game I found elsewhere on Waygook and marginally edited to include "Could you spell that, please?"

My materials for this chapter -

Part A- introduction with some constellations, cover the 'You know..., don't you?' part (the Obama / Trump slides were put in before the election..!) Finished the first page of listening, and played the famous people hotseat game

Part B - review, do the crossword worksheet, and using the key expressions do a quick spelling quiz, calling on individual students to spell words from the chapter (I only had time for 4 or 5 words). My level A's then did the 'Make a constellation' worksheet', and level B's played a slightly edited version of the trashball game from jiepeyman above

Over two weeks, I cover the listen and speak pages in the textbook. The first week, I do listening exercises along with a short activity. The second week, I do the Speak section and the Real-Life Scene and I usually have time for a longer activity. Both weeks are included in one PPT. I have attached the PPT and the worksheets I used. Thank you to the previous posters for their material, especially the Famous People game, my students loved it.

For the famous people game, the students have to write the number on the screen beside the name and the reason the person is famous. In the second class, the students play Battleship using the star names as their ships.
