Fashion & Beauty Trends (with DIY projects) Camp
« on: February 11, 2015, 03:27:36 PM »
Hello,

I am uploading my Lesson Plan, Worksheets, PowerPoint Presentation and examples of the student's projects.

The theme of my winter English camp was "Fashion & Beauty Trends". I did this camp with my 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade Middle School girls. My camp was for 3 hours across 3 days. My school had a more than decent budget for this camp which allowed us to purchase any supplies the students needed. Here is a general outline:

Day 1
-Introduction to the camp theme by first eliciting their thoughts on what fashion and beauty is to them.
-Presentation of what a trends is.
-Introduce key phrases and vocabulary using worksheets (p.2-4)
-Students practice sharing opinions about different subculture trends* using worksheets (p.5)
-Introduction and presentation of DIY projects in relation to subculture trends
-Students work on making their trend board* and research the DIY project that relates to their trend board.

Day 2
-Students shop for supplies needed to create their DIY project.
(I live in Daegu, find an art supply and thrift store near you)
~Art Supply Store:  S.Dot (12-1, 공평동, 중구, 대구)
~Thrift Store: Retro (중구 area)
-Students return to school to start working on their projects

Day 3
-Student's finish their projects
-Student presentation and evaluations using the worksheets (p.6-9). Then class feedback

*I used trends from subcultures (e.g. Grunge, Hipster...) because they are a bit closer to their age than period trends. Thus, they might have seen or heard about it. And I think it's more interesting
*A trend board is a collection of images relating to a particular topic, idea or theme

Posting what I have.

I setup mine to be a 4 hour class, then the students created a poster of their own design.

With this one, I was trying to show the variety of fashion and not just the stereotypical stuff. Being a computer guy and gamer, one video has them watching parts of a cosplay fashion show at Blizzcon. I even had two video's showing the evolution of the Batman and Superman costumes over the years.

For the other video's, just Google around for things like "100 years of fashion in 1 minute". There is some pretty interesting stuff out there.

I put together a fashion packet of sorts that shows the many different types of shoes, hats, etc. and pages with more specific descriptions of colors. The idea was to print off one copy for each student and allow them to take it home, but I and my co-teacher got to thinking it would be a lot of paper and a lot of color ink, so instead we just printed off one per group to share, then offered to print off more (or email it to students) if students really wanted one; .

Something that flew over my head was to cut down on printing. My co-teacher was smart enough to fit a few different things on one sheet of paper. That version is included as a .hwp file. I just had a minor concern that some of the text was hard to read, so it's a judgement call.
