Chunjae Book 1 Grade 6 - Lesson 1 - How's it going?
« Reply #1 on: March 06, 2015, 03:20:51 PM »
I have a sneaking suspicion I may be the only one using these books. If I'm wrong, please post here, because I'm not going to bother uploading materials if no one else is using them. Thanks!

Anyway... my 6th grade coteacher and I don't use the book much except for key phrases and vocabulary. This time, we are refocusing the lesson around the mall, because it's less boring than the school (especially since most schools here have the same layout so everything's usually on the same floor from school to school).

I'm attaching an introductory powerpoint that we will do after usual greetings and a motivation. It introduces the words they will need for the mall activity and the key expressions and reviews the ordinal numbers. We did a lot of work with ordinal numbers in dates in 5th grade with our old book, so this will probably focus more on repeating for pronunciation because many students have problems with 'th' sounds at the end.

For listening practice, we're first going to practice ordinal numbers with a quick slapping game - in pairs, Ss get a set of cards with 1st-10th on them. They lay them out and put their hands on their heads. My coteacher will ask me where something is, and when I answer (eg. "It's on the 4th floor"), the first person to slap the correct card keeps it. The student with the most cards at the end gets a stamp.

After, we are reading a really simple dialogue (attached) and students, in groups of 4 will have 16 cards in front of them with different types of stores, restaurants, bathrooms and an information desk. They will also have a worksheet with a large 10 story building on it. As we read the dialogue, they should try to put the picture cards onto the correct floor. My coteacher is making the cards and has yet to give them to me, but I will attach the images that we are using in the ppt. We are just drawing the buildings on large sheets of paper, so you're on your own there too. :P

Good job!

I'll add mine too!

This is for Lesson 1 Part 1 (1차시)

First introduce the new vocab.

Then practice with flash cards (picture on one side, word on the other)

Teach Key expression "How's it going?"

Last is "Look and Listen". - the big one: they should listen the first time, then listen and write the answers. Then you can have them tell you answers or write them on the board. Then have them repeat after the animations.

So I created a reading/writing/speaking game from SCRATCH!  Took me a long time and now it's here to be shared.  I will just call it the HOUSE GAME for lack of a better title, and it's a spin-off of the ever popular Running Dictation game.

The class is split into 6 teams.  Each team gets a piece of paper, and a house picture card with a house exterior on one side and the interior (cutaway with all the floors and rooms) on the flip side.  The picture cards are placed in various parts of the room.  The students will have to take turns running to the card, flipping it over and looking at the rooms.  They will run back to a designated runner (alternates each turn) and tell them a sentence such as:

"There are ____ rooms."
"The ____ is beside the ______ on the ___ floor." (for rooms beside the outside wall)
"The ____ is between the ______ and _____ on the ___ floor."

Students will take turns relay style until they have completed writing all the instructions.  Once finished, they must bring their paper to a teacher, who will have an envelope for their corresponding house.  Inside the envelope is their house with the cut up rooms.  The students must read the instructions to the teacher, who will put together the rooms.  If the end product matches the picture card, they win!

If they are caught cheating (taking the picture card to the table, drawing diagrams instead of writing sentences), they are OUT OF THE GAME!

This activity is a bit challenging, and 20min or more is definitely needed.  Some assembly required, I glued the pictures onto cards and laminated them (see attached IMGs).  You will also need to label the rooms as I did that afterwards with a pen.  The attached zip file has all the 6 houses and rooms.

Enjoy!

For the writing section I created a writing unscramble game for the students. They can play in teams or as dash game. I also included a writing sentences worksheet from the book.
