This is awesome.
I have changed it slightly so that the kids have to guess the countries at the beginning of the travel powerpoint, Only a slight change, but my kids love games. Here is the altered one.

giving directions and travel.
i used these powerpoints to introduce giving directions and travel. i've listed some attractions from around the globe, then an activity for students to talk about their experiences.
later we talked about some favourite places to hang-out.

Wow, this is way better than the travel lesson I did last year with my students. Definitely going to incorporate some of the ideas here into a new lesson.

Hey All,

Summer Vacation is coming up and even though some students will still be studying, a handful will still be traveling abroad. This is just a quick lesson on three different topics: directions, shopping, and dining. It only scratches the surface, but it is a good way to introduce the concepts into the classroom. Some topics that are on the powerpoint is missing written explanation, but these parts I usually just discuss in the class (e.g. tipping at a restaurant, when you can bargain, other useful vocabulary and phrases).

This is also a good lesson to teachers since some of them will probably be going abroad as well.

The vocabulary itself is easy for a high school level, but the purpose of this lesson is to help them with speaking and pronunciation. It also helps the students to become more aware of traveling scenarios!

Cheers!

Making a Travel Budget/Dream Vacations
« Reply #27 on: November 14, 2011, 02:57:35 PM »
My students always tell me that they really want to go to the U.S./the U.K./Europe/Australia ect. I figured it would be great if they could actually have the experience of planning a ten day trip, estimating airfare from Incheon + hotel + daily travel expenses^^

I looked up the top ten tourist destinations in the world--I showed them this video, which I also linked to in the ppt:

Then, I gave them spreadsheets of cost estimates. They are real numbers taken from kayak.com, hotels.com, and http://www.budgetyourtrip.com/. I had the students work in groups of two to three to complete the worksheet.

Thanks guys, these are really good ideas...I tried some of them in my class yesterday and they went pretty well

I find that a my students are really curious about travel/tourism across the world...all I did was show a quick Youtube video about the top tourist destinations and showed some pictures of my own travels...then I had them plan their own fantasy vacation. There were still a few students who said that they didn't care and didn't have any interest in leaving Korea, so I just had them make fantasy trip for someone coming to Korea..

I took this lesson, made a new worksheet, polished it up, simplified the language, and updated the prices on plane tickets and daily travel costs. When students choose their city, plane ticket, hotel, I display it all on the TV and let the students take time to write it down.

This lesson is very effective because of the realness of it. My students loved it and even my co-teachers planned their trip too. I remind them that I looked up these numbers myself and you can really do this trip. When they pick their city I encourage them to think of either an expensive trip or a cheap trip, because a lot of classes will only choose first class plane tickets.

I end the lesson by writing on the board "If you want to travel the world, you must learn English", something to help motivate them. Sometimes the students will just say "no, tour guide" instead.

Thank you for posting this. I plan on using it with my after school kids next week. They are higher level so I will most likely be making some small changes, which I'll post here.

This lesson worked pretty well with my class. I asked them simple questions about travelling and then showed them a short video. I them write about their most memorable trip and then had some of them present.

I did the   9-Plan your Vacation lesson and worksheet today with my 3rd year HS students a few times.

No real changes except I added the questions: Why do you want to go to your city?  and How will you pay for your vacation?  part time job, savings, and Rush-in-cash..

The students really got into this lesson!  Especially when I mentioned the idea of watching a live soccer match in Europe.  I think this time of year and the beautiful weather helped make this lesson a lot more relevant as no one wants to be inside on a beautiful spring day and the studying is really getting to the kids.

Anyhoo...Thankyouthankyouthankyou
