2015 Grade 6 Daekyo 1 - 2. How Do You Say "Hello" in Korean?
« on: March 20, 2015, 12:09:32 PM »
Publisher: DAEKYO
Lead Author: 이재근

I noticed that the link for Lesson 2 in the Daekyo book hasn't been created. I wanted to share my lesson. (Excuse how boring it may seem, working from scratch with not much else to use)

Ppt:
Song: "Let it Go" sung in 25 different languages. There is a different link in the note sections if you want to see the people who are singing. Figured it would be nice for the kids to see this.
Key Expressions: How do you say ... in...? We say... What did you say? I said...
Practice: Using key expressions to ask how you say: Hello, Thank you, Good-bye (how it's said in 6 different languages. You can delete or add different languages)
Game: Pass the ball (has examples of when things are said wrong in English, or how to ask how to say it in Korean. More emphasis on those two languages than any other)

Daekyo: Grade 6 - Lesson 2 - How Do You Say "Hello" In Korean?

Here's a vocab and expressions PPT: students must try to guess the words by looking at the pictures... and then they can practice the basic key expressions.

Board Game: Up and Down arrows boards game, each group need a dice and they must say an expression for the pictures...there is a key slide for the pictures at the end of the PPT.

Basic key expressions and some awesome comics (Comic sounds in other languages) I used for my other textbook last year. Kids love them - I included a large selection, I'd edit it down quite a lot - it's more fun than productive so just choose a few and use them to get the kids interested at the beginning.

Here are my activities for this lesson.  Some are cobbled together from other posters' work, some are my own.  The activity "Bob wants to say Hi" looks like a wordsearch, but it is not--it is a maze; be sure you get familiar with how it works.  Students enjoy it quite a lot.

I'm posting both a sign language activity and a text lingo one--I think I'm going to do text lingo, because I fear ASL is too difficult--the video I linked to is the water pump scene from The Miracle Worker.  There are several copies on YT.

All six of my classes really enjoyed this video showing "hello" in 30 languages. If they could guess the country of the language correctly, they got a point.

The kdrama ppt was also a fun time-killer, I played with teams of 5 or 6, the first team to say the name correctly (or close enough) in English got the point.

A worksheet that includes vocab & sentences with definitions, some phonics, and activities when you have extra time in class.

Domino reading game.

Print, I believe, 6 slides to a page to make cards. Make sure you hand out ALL of the cards, otherwise it will not work properly. I made a separate set for each class to avoid the problem of lost cards.

I also hand made a round of four cards, to have four students demonstrate in front of the class.

Each student gets a card. Teacher asks "Who is first?" and starts the stopwatch. The student with the answer "I'm first" stands up, answers, asks their question and stays standing. The student who has the correct answer is the next to stand up. I played through the Q&A two times (it links back to student #1 since the last card asks who is first again.) When it links back, the students read their cards and then sit down after their turn.  Only once all of the students are sitting does the teacher stop the clock.

I made this a class vs. other classes game and charted their time on the board. Each class had two tries. In my classes of about 25 kids, the first try usually took about 5 minutes. The second attempt was usually around 2-3 minutes.

Also, this chapter was terrible. I didn't think this chapter could get any worse from last year. But then this one was published and proved me wrong. Ughhh. So little content in this one, but then, comparatively, the next chapter drops a content bomb with invitations to parties, ordinal numbers, months, asking when something is...

Listening & Speaking:
Slap the Flag - I divided the class in half and had one person from each team come up.  You say the word "hello" or "xie xie" and the students have to slap the right flag.  Start with two flags, get increasingly difficult by adding more flags to chose from.
Telephone Game - pretty self-explanatory

Reading & Writing:
Reading Game - just a fun little challenge for the students.
Trash Ball - Again divide the class in half and have one person from each team come up.  Give them a ball of paper, post the flags on the white board.  Next to the flags the teacher will write the sentences: "We say kap kun in Thailand."  The students will have to read it as you write and the first student to successfully hit the correct flag with the trash ball wins a point for their team.
Stations - station worksheet, some at their desk and some at stations.  Modified from another person's station worksheet that was posted in another forum.  I give them five minutes to do each section, first to finish correctly wins.

Enjoy!

ps - I hated this lesson.

Short version - here's a shiny new PPT to start this lesson with key expressions and some practice.

Long version - what in the world is this chapter? Asking how to say a korean word in Chinese, but asking the question in English? WHAT!?

Mixing together "how to say hello in Thai" with "I want to be a comedian" and "how much is this jacket?" How are any of those things related? Good lawd.

Good luck everyone.

(also forgot to add - thank you to the original poster who shared the comic sounds, I used a few of them as warm-up in the PPT - they're really great.)

My "Tomb Raiders" game.  Teams have to decode the hieroglyphic messages and write the sentences correctly on their whiteboard.  Full instructions included on the PPT.  My students like this activity a lot.

Two powerpoints to review vocab at the start of a class.

First is vanilla review work of the key expressions in period one.
Second adds in a couple of new things to keep it interesting, reviews everything from the previous classes and ends with a catch the sentence practice activity. I'm going to use it in period four.
