GRADE 5, LESSON 11, MY FAVORITE SUBJECT IS SCIENCE

This is a great song from THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

But it is 2 Koreans doing it. I'll use it for motivation:

Then I'll teach them to sing a new song using the words and phrases, but with the same melody. (see attached)

For the first or second lesson, a pass the ball and line bingo game.

For the line bingo game I entered the words into 'Random Student Selector' on barryfunenglish.com If you don't have a barryfun account, just call out the words randomly.

Here is a PPT I made and a connect four game to play for speaking.

I made a speaking relay which went over very well with students.

I had them stay in their seats (easier to control) and made the partner on the left side A and right side B.

I then gave them a card (see attached cutouts) with A and B question and answer which A and B read aloud.

Then they handed back to the next pair.

Students helped each other or teachers helped slower students as needed.

The whole exercise was timed. First time was practice.

Second time they switched roles and goal was to beat the first time.

They got a class point if done successfully.

The second class competed against the first class too.

The best thing was that all of them did a lot of speaking and listening and reading.

My Favorite Things Worksheet
This can take 15-25 minutes depending on how you want to use it.

Guided writing practice worksheet.
Write the various favorites on the board (sport, animal, color, food etc...)
And then get the class to brainstorm some answers (e.g. orange, yellow) and write them on the board, they might need to refresh their memories for spelling so this is a good opportunity to do so.

Extra time can be spent coloring it in and making it look nice.

Students can volunteer to share after they've finished. Or make a little game out of it: collect the sheets and read them out, the class has to guess whose 'favorite' sheet you have read out.

Speaking Game:

I am not the original creator. The students will be in four teams and they will pick an answer to the question. Once all teams have picked an answer click ninja attack and the ninjas will come out. If the ninja lands on your spot your team gets a point.

References: My favorite subject is, science, math, english, P.E, what's your favorite subject?

I edited someones zombie game from an earlier chapter (10 I think). I never used it then, adapted it for grade 6 and it worked reasonably well, so I've ran it this chapter for grade 5. They love the game, but depending on the class, it can take a lot of policing and without a co teacher present (which is sometimes the case) id of had a problem. Thank you to the original poster.

Hot Seat Speaking and Reading Game
Give each group a minute and a half to 2 minutes to guess as many slides as possible. One student sits with his/her back to the screen. Then the other students have to gesture or give clues, depending on the round, that helps that student guess the phrase. When the phrase is guessed correctly, they rotate out letting another member of the team take the hot seat. I usually allow 3 passes to keep things going.

Thanks to whoever originally invented this game. Our students love it.
