Lesson 5-1
Introduction lesson covering Key Words and Expressions in both English and Korean. Ppt and worksheet. Backside of worksheet is matching written times to a clock (Sorry its not in the same document, I made it later).

Lesson 5-2
Disappearing dialogue for memorization practice. (from Look & Say)

Lesson 5-3
Tactical Tic-Tac-Toe
Students play in pairs. There are 3 different boards to play, each with different vocabulary. Students read the dialogue and fill in the blanks with the words from the space they want to claim. Boards A & B use dialogue <A&B>. Board C uses dialogue <C>.

This is a reading game based on Baskin Robbins 31. Students will play RPS to decide the playing order. The students choose to read 1, 2 or 3 sentences. Whoever reads the last sentence scores 1. Everybody starts from the top again and whoever scores the highest points is the winner.

We played this in part 3 of this lesson.

I adapted this from a previous post. Thanks a million to the original poster.

An updated version of Dessa's survey worksheet from here. I intend to have students survey each other, and then afterwards, stick their details in the lower half for a snowball fight extension activity if time permits.

Changes from textbook: 'come home' has been corrected to 'get home'.

Here's all my stuff for this chapter as I'm finished with it as of this week.  Hopefully the Mario Wii game works fine on your class computer.  I used the 2007 template.  Check to make sure the answer bar on the bottom appears on click and not with the question bar on top.

You'll have to write the sentence strips to give to students. Show a slide on the powerpoint and whichever student has the activity, and whichever student has the correct time will run to the middle and read their sentence.  Better directions on the ppt.

This is a project for this chapter. Students get to draw and write how their daily life is like. Like a clock~ I think it's a great activity for students to utilize what they have learned in this lesson. Hope it helps :)

PS: I had to connect the numbers to make it look like a clock~

in regards to the Mario game:
The P-button thing does not work for me. It shows the animation but then nothing happens. The annotation says it's supposed to force a team to choose faster but how is it supposed to work? I think some of the sounds are not working. Also, I'm not sure if it's just me or it's designed that way, but usually with bomb games you pick a block, answer the question, and then the block disappears once you go back to the question menu. For some reason this game does not do that. The blocks remain.

I never got the P-button to work either so I just gave students a countdown myself if they were taking too long to answer.  The blocks should remain but the letters should disappear.  Here's the link to the game creator's thread.  He may be able to answer your questions better than I can. Great idea and thanks for the ppt. To keep the students who had finished motivated, I did this as a team game. Each half of the class has a full set of slips and the fastest person wins a point for their team.

Never actually got around to using this, but prepared the strips just to be safe, so here they are. Save yourself the energy of writing them out.

Both my listening and speaking classes will be in this post.

1. Intro, Listening
Motivation/Lesson introduction: Hide alarm in room and ask students to help find it. Ask students what time they set their alarm clocks in the morning and write their answers on the board.
Intro ppt (my intro ppt is AWESOME - if I do say so myself ;)
Listen & repeat

2. Speaking
Time Bingo (10)
  • Give students a piece of paper with 16 clock and give them 3 minutes to draw clock faces with different times.
  • Go around the room asking students “What time do you __?” They should respond in a full sentence (i.e. I eat breakfast at 8 o’clock.), teacher should reply (That’s very early/late!).
  • First students with 2 bingos gets a stamp.

Partner game (15)
  • Rock paper scissors, winner draws a card from the 6 in the back of the book and asks friend “What time do you __?”
  • Student responds, I __ at (and then picks a time on the wkst)
  • Winner can color that box in their color.
  • Student with the most boxes at the end is the winner


Time Survey (15)
  • Students fill out the answers on the right side of the worksheet first at their desks.
  • Then they walk around the room, asking what time other students do things.
  • On their bingo board, they should put the name of their friend and what time he/she does (verb).
  • Students who finish get a stamp.

Reading and Writing class


3. Reading
Motivation: a Korean High School student’s day (5)
  • Watch the video and write on the board the different things the student does during the day.
  • Do you have a similar or different day than him?

Reading Domino: In groups of ~10, students read each card as fast as they can while teachers time them

Partner dice bingo (10)

Crime scene (15)
  • Students are told there is a “hacker” who deleted some sensitive info
  • They have to look at the schedules of the suspects to see if anything looks suspicious
  • Post the clues around the room.
  • In pairs, students gather the info - relay style. Only one student can be up looking at the clues at a time.
  • They should work together to recreate the suspects’ schedules on the day the info was deleted.
  • The hacker is David… He goes to the library while the others go to lunch.
  • Students who finish first get 2 stamps, students who finish get 1


4. Writing: Stations

The 4th or 5th class of each lesson is my "Stations" class. In their end of the year survey last year, my students said they felt the least confident in writing. The stations heavily rely on writing. I really like stations because they get the kids up and moving, and also allow students to complete the activities at their own pace.

Students complete the stations individually. They are given a creative project at the end of stations so that the high level students that finish quickly can work on something instead of bothering the other students.

I have attached my stations ppt and will explain each slide.
Slide 1 & 2: Station wkst. If you want to print the wkst in half sheets to save paper, use these two slides
Slide 3: Station wkst one-sided.
Slide 4: Station 3:
  • Print 3 of each and post them in one corner/area of a room designated "Station 3."
  • Students should decode the key expressions using the pictures.

Slide 5: Station 4:
  • Again, print 3 and post in a corner/area of your room designated "Station 4."
  • Students should answer the questions

Here's what to do at each station:

1 - Translate Korean to English at desk
2 - Draw a verb card (from tear outs in the back of textbook); Students use clock from Chonjae’s book materials to set a time without looking behind their back; write in the box the combination you got (i.e. I get up at 5:40.). Circle if the time is early or late
3 - Decode sentences (slide 4)
4 - Answer the questions, using key expressions (slide 5)
5 - Roll multi-sided dice that have both a time and verb on it (from previous textbook’s materials? - sorry I know not everyone has this material, but feel free to add your own activity)

Afterwards - Students should make a dream day. What would they do in a day if they could do anything? (Note: They can be boring and use the verbs from the textbook also.) Next class, make comic strips about their dream day.

It's been almost a year since this was posted, but as the original template maker I want to clarify that the problem was caused because whoever made this game saved it as a *.ppt file and not a *.pptx file. That also caused the answers and questions to show at the same time.

The letter on the block fades so that students know which letters have been chosen, but the brown block remains, allowing you to click it to bring the letter back by clicking it. I've had many instances where students have said one letter, but I didn't hear them correctly and I clicked a different letter. Leaving the brown blocks allowed me to go back and bring the letter back and then go to the question they really wanted.

I didn't see this last year because I was working in a middle school, and only saw it now because I am teaching elementary again.

I realized I never posted these last year...they are sequence stories....I retaught some words and then the students read the story and numbered it in order. It was simple and the students like it!

I added extra activities as well.
