Lesson 6-1
Introduction lesson covering Key Words and Expressions in both English and Korean. Ppt and worksheet.

Lesson 6-2
Pass the Ball and Flick Game.
Pass the Ball is pretty self-explanatory.
Flick Game is a pair game. Students put a Go-piece, eraser, etc... on 'START' and flick it. If they land on a box, they have to complete the dialogue using the space they landed on, and then they can claim the box. Bombs are 'lose a turn.' Student with the most spaces wins the game. Note: For the Pass the Ball Game, I used a separate font to make it look prettier. It's called Scribble Box, and I included it in the attachments. =] Just make sure you install it first.
Also, added Disappearing Dialogue retroactively. =]

Lesson 6-3
Stars Writing Game. It's like a writing telepathy game.

Lesson 6-5
Card Capture Game. Instructions are part of the file.

Lesson 6-6
Minecraft Review Bomb Game. One of the letters is broken and resets the letters (I think it's F), so you might consider keeping track of what letters have been chosen just in case =] ).

VERY easy Rock/Scissor/Paper speaking game to practice

"May, I help you?"
"Yes, please. I'm looking for a jacket/hat/pencil case/kite/watch/bag"

It's a pair speaking activity but so easy so I will use in period 1.

Intro ppt with key expressions for the first period, along with an up/down game.

Play this game as a whole class activity and have them first ask the question, "May I help you?" then have a student make the sentence "Yes, please. I'm looking for a ____." After that ask how much is the item, and choose a student to answer, "It's _____ won." Then, students should guess if the item is higher or lower than the price listed. If they think it's higher, they should stand up; if lower, stay seated. Check the price and those students who got it right get a point each. Have the students repeat the final price e.g. "It's 9,000 won."

Adapted from template on Waygook.

Teacher says "I'm looking for _________"
 or                "It's too ______________".

Give each pair a red and a blue card (put between pairs on the desk).

Students put their hands on their heads and slap the color card that matches the word you say. Simple but great for listening and reading.

Reading worksheet I made.  Go over the words in class (have your korean co teacher help with this part)  Then read it once with the class.  The class then (if they have time) answers the questions and you go over it in class.

I then have them take it home. They read it to their parents 3 times out loud and their parent signs that the student finished it.

This story is about Thor losing his hammer. ^^

The unscramble, I will have them do in their teams.  They need to unscramble first, and then write the Korean translation underneath it (I have one class that is struggling and I think group work may really help the lower level)

The coded sentences is just fun and gets them writing.  They look at the pictures and write the correct letters.

This is fantastic. I made a PPT to use this story in class. Hopefully it lives up to your standards.

Intro/Listening class and Speaking/Listening class

Intro and Listening class

Motivation - mystery box: Put money from different countries in the mystery box (5)

Intro ppt: New words, key expressions (20)

How much is it? relay (15)
  • Place different cups around the room with different amounts (numbers in written form) glued to the front of the cups
  • Each group has 1 10,000 won bill; 1 5,000 won bill; 4 1,000 won bills; 1 500 won coin, 4 100 won coins (fake money that you print out beforehand)
  • In relay fashion, students run to get a cup, bring it back to their group and fill the cup with the correct amount of money and bring it to show the teachers.
  • If they are correct, their group gets one point and they take the cup back to its location and go get another one.
  • Practice ppt students can practice reading numbers for stamps after we complete the activity
  • Note: this game got a bit hectic. They stopped following the "only one person up at a time" rule and I just let them do it. The only hardcore rule I stuck by was fighting over cups. If they fought over a cup, both groups lost points. However it was as great game - all students were very motivated.

Listening, Speaking class

Review (5)

Listen & repeat/do from textbook (10)

Line bingo (10)
  • Use materials (six vocab cards from back of textbook)
  • Students use the top 6 cards from the textbook and make a line
  • Teachers have a conversation using the key expressions and students flip over the cards that match the conversation (unless the cards are not at the end)
  • First student to flip over all of their cards get a stamp

Roleplay (15)
  • 10 students start as clerks
  • There are 5 "restaurants" (desks with a sign taped on the front and two menus, and two clerks at each one)
  • "Customers" choose a picture of an item from the bag (teacher is holding this) and go to one of the 5 restaurants to find the food they drew from the bag.
  • All students get a checklist with the dialogue on the back.
  • When students finish being a clerk or customer at a restaurant, they should check the corresponding box on their checklist and go to be a clerk or customer at a different restaurant.
  • Students must be a clerk and a customer at all of the restaurants in order to  get a stamp

Reading class, Writing class, and Stations class

Reading Class
Warm-up: OMOK (10)
  • Students alternate reading expressions and marking with a dry erase marker on the box they read
  • When they get 5 in a row they win the game, erase their boards, and play again

Simpsons Story (30)
(Note: I am including the template from which I took the Simpsons story in my post. It has a lot of great "store" scenes with Simpsons charactors. Not sure who the creator is (sorry). The ppt is very well made, however it is from a different textbook, so you will need to change the slides to fit the key expressions)
  • Teachers read the story (2)
  • Teachers ask comprehension questions about the story.
  • 3 row teams (~8 students per team) have a reading race: partners read a slide together and then the partners behind them read the next slide and so on until the team finishes reading the story and the team to get the lowest time wins (8 mins) (Note: If students are being rude to each other (BBALLI! BBALLIIII!) add seconds to their score and conversely take seconds off their time if they use kind encouraging words to each other; I know it's a bit forced but it helps)
  • In pairs, students fill in the blanks in the story on their own worksheets; for more than 10 blanks correct - 1 stamp, for all blanks correct - 2 stamps (10)
  • Cut out slides and have groups of students put in correct order if some students finish early (optional - 10)

Writing
Review (10)
  • In groups, students use whiteboards to write the key expressions
  • If they are able to remember all of the key expressions, they get a stamp
Running dictation (10)
  • There are different phrases from a conversation pasted around the room.
  • This is a group relay game. One student runs and looks at the phrase and then back to the others to tell them what was on the paper.
  • All students in the group write the phrase. This continues until students have written all 7 phrases
  • Students should then number their sentences in the correct order of a conversation
Roleplay (20)
  • Show students examples of a role play.
  • Students can choose between three role play options available: easy, medium, hard
  • Hard: 3 stamps (2 for writing; 1 for presenting); Medium: 2 stamps (1 for writing, 1 for presenting); Easy: 1 stamp for presenting
  • After doing so much with the role play story from our Reading Class, I would say 50% of the students felt comfortable writing their own role play from scratch.

Stations class
(Note about stations class: The 4th or 5th class of each lesson is my "Stations" class. In their end of the year survey last year, my students said they felt the least confident in writing. The stations heavily rely on writing. I really like stations because they get the kids up and moving, and also allow students to complete the activities at their own pace.

For the stations, you will need to print 3 or 4 of each Station slides and post them in one corner/area of a room designated "Station #," with the exception of the story, which you should print at least 6 and have them all grouped in one area of the room for students to grab and read individually.

Students complete the stations individually. They are given a creative project or bookwork at the end of stations so that the high level students that finish quickly can work on something instead of bothering the other students.)

Students present role plays they wrote yesterday for stamps (10)

Stations (30)
  • Station 1: translating Korean to English at desk
  • Station 2: Roll the dice and put the number in the box; write the amount in the box next to the number.
  • Station 3: Decode the key expressions and put them in the correct order
  • Station 4: “Find the dancing smileys;” write 8 different combinations of the three columns; students who write the same combination as on the teacher’s ppt, get an extra stamp. Click on all the different boxes… The smileys are hidden under “The jacket is fifteen thousand won. It’s too big.”
  • Station 5: Students read the story about Kayla going to the zoo and answer the questions. Do story comprehension check at the end of the class.
If they finish early, they can work in their book (pgs 94-97)

Target language PPT with the optional overlays for word stress and sentence stress or chants. Sticks quite closely to the book.
