these are my materials for the first 2 periods of this lesson. These materials have been taken and edited slightly from other people. Unfortunately didn't have time over vac to make much original stuff, was really busy with camps and various other things. Nonetheless I hope these can help people, the materials have been edited to match the vocab/key expressions in this particular book and chapter.

I'm planning on spending quite a lot of time explaining past tense to my students as I've noticed even a lot of adult Koreans struggle with past tense verb conjugations. That's why there's a past tense intro PPT plus a review PPT for period 2. Going to try drill it into them more with worksheets when we get to the writing part.

PERIOD 1:
1. Past tense intro PPT
2. O/X Game - to practice past tense verb conjugations
3. Pair talking activity + instructions. For this i would print more cards than you actually need so that if students run out of cards they can come to you and take more. I would print and laminate these cards.

PERIOD 2:
1. Past tense review PPT. Got this excellent PPT off here, think I may have edited it to simplify it a little bit.
2. Speaking Guessing Game - this is kinda like battleships, but simplified a lot. I got this from here but edited it to match the vocab/expressions from this textbook, and added some new pictures. Print out Slide 2 to give to the students. The rest of the slides contain an explanation of how to play.

Here are some of my past tense activities.

Friends Guessing Game - Have one student come up to the front of the class and secretly write his/her answer on a white board.
The teams try to guess the student's answer.

Tic Tac Toe - Divide the class into two teams. To take a square, the team member has to speak a sentence using the word in the square.
(Often kids aren't familiar with this game, so you have to explain the game first.)

Whose Song - Give each team a white board. I play the song, and the teams write the singer/song title for points. Then I reveal the lyrics from the song. Each team must write the verbs they see in past tense for extra points.

More stuff from me

PERIOD 3:
Worksheet, adapted from someone else in an old thread. The fill in the blanks goes with Story 2.
Also a vocab intro PPT and a bingo game adapted from someone else.

PERIOD 4:
Mario 'what's behind' reading game;
Vocab Intro PPT;
Also a reading sequencing game. How this works is that you print out the slides under the 'print these slides' part of the PPT. Cut those up, and put them in envelopes. Each team gets 1 envelope. They then need to look at the slides with the pictures, and put the sentences in the correct order. After that, get them to write everything down on a whiteboard to practice their writing and also to make the game a bit longer. If they get it correct they get 2 points, first team to finish gets 1 bonus point too.

Note that this takes quite a bit of prep time in terms of cutting out the slides and putting them in the envelopes. But I just got bored of doing the same reading games over and over with my students, so wanted to try something different. Going to use this as my main activity and the Mario game as a back-up in case i run out of time. Got the sequencing game idea from another thread somewhere, just turned it into a PPT.

Battle Ninja stick man game- awesome for listening/reading/speaking:

- Instructions on PPT too: each student draws 5 stick men on their table.  Students listen to the alphabet letter and word and look if they have a stick man at the point where they meet. If they do, their stick man dies. The student with the most stick men left is the winner.
-Print out the printable version attached. Each student gets 2 tables.

Cowboy game (thanks to the original creator of this template):

-Instructions on PPT, but basically: 2 students stand in front of the TV, then turn around when they hear the 'shot gun' sound and the first one of the 2 to say the right expression, gets a point for their team.

EDIT: I am so terribly sorry, I accidentally uploaded the wrong, unfinished cowboy game the first time (around the beginning of Aug, but the one currently (uploaded Sept 02) is the right one. Sorry again.

Hope everyone had a fun & safe vacation. Here's an intro ppt made in a style similar to the ones by jblant01 because I'm unoriginal & a slap game.

If/when I make more ppt's I'll edit this post & attach them here. Happy teaching!

Intro: Pretty self explanatory. (Ideal for the first period)

Slap game: Divide the class into two teams, 2 students come up to the front and have their back facing the TV screen with fly swatters. Everyone asks me "What did you do during your vacation?" I answer "I ____." Both students then turn around & the first person to slap the correct activity on the TV using the fly swatter gets a point for their team. (Ideal for the first period)

Pass the Pencil Case game: Instructions included in the PPT. (Ideal for the first or second period)

Pirates of Past Tense game: Instructions included in the PPT. (Ideal for the third period)

Code Breaker 3000 game: Divide the class into however many teams you wish & give them whiteboards, students take turns unscrambling the sentences. Click the on/off switch on the panel just under where it says "Code Breaker 3000" to reveal the answer, click the screw to the right of the panel to go to the next slide (or just hit the space bar). (Ideal for the fifth period)

What I did for MY second lesson - my colleague also teaches the chapter so it's roughly the 3rd or 4th lesson in the chapter.

TEAM VOCAB RACE
On Ppt we reviewed past tense verbs that we've been practicing so far.
SS get 5 mins to study/practice their past tense verb in their teams (3-4 SS per team).
Once the time is up teams line up (with pencils in hand) in front of the board where I've put up a team vocab race sheet for each team.  On the GO command the first SS must run up to the board and write the past tense verbs for the first word.  If they do not know the next word on the list, they must make an X.  After writing ONE word, member runs back to team and the next person runs to the board and fills int he next word.  Team mates may not correct or over-write errors.  Once all the words are done, all team members huddle around their paper to fill in the sentences collectively. I give each team their sheet back after having marked it so that they can see their errors.

AS an optional activity you could let SS restudy their words and repeat the process to see whether they can improve on their previous effort.  This could be done immediately or you could do it again at the beginning of the next period.


LINE BINGO
Each SS gets a strip.  (print and cut the attached doc) They must write the past tense verbs under the present.  Once ready we start to play BINGO.  Any SS may volunteer to make a sentence with the past tense verb on either end of their strip of paper.  Other SS must listen.  If they have the same verb at either end of the strip they can tear it off.  I also write the verb of each given sentence on the board for the lower level SS to help them follow the game.
whenever a SS has only one word left in their hand they can shout BINGO.


SPEECH BUBBLE WRITING
First I show SS some pictures and ask them to make sentences about what they did during the vacation.  I write these sentences on the board and leave it up providing scaffolding for the lower level SS to refer to later.  Stronger SS may use these sentences or make their own.
Each SS then gets a small paper (which I printed out and cut up) and must write their name and at least one past tense sentence in the speech bubble.  I encourage the stronger SS to write more.
Once they have finished writing they must draw their faces in the blank space next to the speech bubble. 

At the end of the lesson I collected all the speech bubbles and I made a poster for each class with all their sentences.  Each class now has their poster on our classroom wall.


WORD SEARCH
Because my SS levels vary greatly in each class I have a word search to keep the SS who finish before others busy.

Edited a Studio Ghibli Bomb Game. I used some images/Korean from Kwai_Chang_Kain's intro ppt, so credit to him for that. I download the game template from somewhere here, so thanks to the creator for that.

For part 6, there is a TED talk on the Ted website with Richard Turere explaining the Lion Lights. You can download it with Korean subtitles.

You can make a small worksheet about the TED talk to make sure the students pay attention.
My co-teacher made it so I don't have a copy but the questions were about what he said.

Students enjoyed it!

This game turned out pretty fun. It's a guessing game of how many students in the class did the thing shown on screen.

1) White board to each team.
2) For each question, each team writes down how many students in their class they think did the thing shown on screen. (The first question is an example, since everyone in class undoubtedly ate kimchi over the summer.)
3) After I write down the teams' guesses on the board, I count to 3. The students who actually did the things over the summer stand up.
4) I write down the number of actual students, and the team with the closest guess wins the point.

To award more points, I also employed this alternate point system:
Perfect Guess (5 points)
Guess off by 1 (2 points)
Guess off by 2 (1 point)

I found the TEDTalk. The problem with it is the Korean is small, but I think it is still a good resource to use.

I made a worksheet to go along with the TED. The vocabulary are all part of the answers. I probably should have used other words, like invent, as vocabulary, but I wanted to stick with words they will write in the answer because I feel they will remember it more if they have to use it as an answer.

If you don't like the font or something that I used, please change it!

Please note: I always make my word puzzles using capital letters. I think it looks nicer.

I made this kind of last minute and I haven't tested it yet, but I did make an answer key, so the word puzzle should be ok. Some of the letters in the puzzle kind of jumped up when I put the red line over them. I can't be bothered to fix it and it is just for teachers anyway.

For the short answer questions, I want my students to practice writing, so I made the answers be full sentences. If your students are lower level, go ahead and change the worksheet to a more fill in the blank type answer.

If you find a mistake, please tell me! I am doing it in two days, if I find a mistake I will change it and upload a corrected version!

Update The class went fine and the students enjoyed the talk. The subtitles were better on the big screen than I thought they would be.

I did notice the word lion was spelled wrong on one of the questions (it was loin instead, whoops!) I fixed it and have uploaded the corrected versions.

I made a super simplified version of your worksheet, Annataleen. It's too easy for my higher level students, but excellent for my intermediate and lower level kids. Thanks!!

Also, downloading the video per Seoul_Love's advice makes for bigger, clearer subtitles.
