My coteachers never want to actually do the full two periods of Storytime, so we always combine the two into one period. We get rid of the "World Tour", and instead just do role-plays. It's difficult for the kids to memorize in one period, so I developed this method:
1. Listen to the Story
2. Listen and Repeat
3. Disappearing Dialogue
4. Practice (with your groups)
5. Role-Play
This gives them more than enough practice to learn their roles. (Especially since I always tell them they will be performing at the end.)
Also, to avoid fighting and inevitable "I want to go last" whining, I have 1 student from each group come up and randomly grab a ball (or stick or whatever) with a number on it. Although this process takes times, in the end, it makes the process of getting groups to come forward much faster... no heel dragging, no whining... Also, my students (mostly) love doing role-plays. :D
(And if it isn't obvious from the PPT, the students are in groups of four and so two students say the lines together. This being 3rd grade and their first role-play, I hoped this would be less stressful... And also, I'd rather listen to 6 Role-plays than 12 O_O)
