Overall, this lesson is just poor. Considering I just taught "May I sit here?" to my 5th graders. Textbook frustration...

Anyway, here are two games for listening and last period review.
For the listening game, make (and laminate) a red card and blue card. Students listen to your sentence and snatch the proper card.

Deal or No Deal Game (improved and adapted from another...GREAT game idea!)

Had some time today so did up the vocabulary reviewing/drilling/practising presentation for this unit in advance. It's a bit lengthier than I'd have liked, but you can prune it down to size. As usual, click the little button in the corner to display stress patterns ("big and little claps") on vocab items.

Overall, this lesson is just poor. Considering I just taught "May I sit here?" to my 5th graders. Textbook frustration...

I feel your pain, I'm guessing you had it drilled into you as a child much like I did:
A. Can I sit here?
B. I don't know, can you?
C. Oh, may I sit here?
D. Yes, you may.

Thing is, 'can' for permission is a common variant in American English so the students need to know both. The good thing is, this chapter immediately follows "May I Take Your Order?" so you can at least compare the two directly rather than dredging up hazy memories of the past and then changing them inexplicably. If anything, I'm concerned there's a lack of material in the chapter as 90% of the vocabulary is revision and the main phrase is just a one word change on the previous unit.

Now, if you want to talk hopeless, there's a chapter in the 5th book on 'will' and another in the 6th book of 'going to' which are basically copypasta. The chapter on 'will' barely uses a single correct context, instead serving up a muddle of future plans ('going to') and future arrangements (pres. progressive for future). It's one thing to not teach grammar explicitly at elementary school level, but there should at least be some discernable difference in contexts and motivation.

Edit: Added a new optional feature.

This is meant to be used for period 4

Sentence Jumble
Instructions
Preparation:
1.   Make a series of sentences, three more than the number of teams in your class
2.   Print the sentences in large text
3.   Cut each sentence into separate words
4.   Put each sentence into its separate envelopes
5.   Number each envelope with a marker

Instructions:
1.   Diving the class into pairs or small groups
2.   Give each team one envelope
3.   Students arrange the words into a correct sentence, copy it into their notebooks, and put words back into envelope
4.   When finished, students say the sentence, show their notebooks, and bring their envelope to the teacher
5.   If sentence is not correct, they go back and fix the error
6.   If sentence is correct, they can swap their envelope for a new one with a different sentence
7.   The first team to unscramble all of the sentences is the winner
Happiness is a choice.

A game I made myself.  All is explained on the third slide. I wasn't sure how the kids would take to it, but they actually had a good time of it.  I used it for my LISTENING class, though you could argue that it's more of a speaking game. Hope you like it~

Thank you for this! my students absolutely loved it. It was a little difficult to explain as I don't have a Korean co-teacher helping me but what a great activity!

here are a few things i made or edited. (the fun with words is off of KTteachers fun with words ppts they make...mine is shortened because I want to fit it in and don't have too much time for it! btw KT teacher...your posts have been awesome ^^ )

the worksheet is meant to go over in class (like the vocab) and they read it quietly and answer the questions, go over in class, and then they take it home and read it 3x out loud to their parents and get the parent's signature when they are done.

The practice ppt I made to go in the presentation portion the same day i played the charades game posted above. It helps review the sentences and really helped my lower level students

Oh! Also, sentence fluency strips.  Print each page on a different color paper. Cut the sentences out. Each team will get a set of all the colors. Cut the sentences into individual words and give each group of students (individual, desk partner, or teams of four, based on your class's english level and the amount of prepwork you want to do) a bag of the words all mixed up (it's very colorful ^^).  They color the bubble, assemble the sentence, write the sentence, and then move on to the next color. To add competitiveness, the first few to come to me and read all their sentences "win".

Rip Bingo (~15min, 20150529 ppt)
Each student gets one strip of paper (see attachment). Students have to listen to what the teacher says and check whether that expression is at either of the ends of their bingo strip. If it is, they rip it off. If it's in the middle, they have to wait. The winner is the first person to rip their strip all up. I used the cards in the [hint] attachement, put them face down, and drew cards at random to make it fair. If I kept drawing the same card or no one had that picture at the end, I took it out of the game for a little while.

Telepathy game (~25min, 20150529 ppt) **I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS GAME**
Teams of 5. One team at a time comes up to the front and closes their eyes. The teacher shows the rest of the class the answer on the tv. The teacher takes away the answer. The team then opens their eyes and have to guess what the answer is. If it's correct, the other students say "Sure, you can." If it's incorrect, they say "Sorry, you can't." Points based on how many tries the team needs to guess correctly.

Co-operation Bingo (~15min, 20150605 ppt)
Each student gets a table (see attachment). Go through the words on the table and then ask students to draw five stars anywhere they like. Play the game: One student at a time asks the teacher one of the vertical boxes and the teacher replies with one of the answers in the horizontal boxes. Students check the corresponding box to see if they can cross out a star. The first student to cross out all their stars is the winner.

"A needy friend" memory game (~20min, 20150605 ppt)
Teams of 6. Each student gets a card. The first student has to say their card. The second student says the first card and their card, etc., until the last student says all the cards. The fastest team is the winner.

"Table Time" Skills Lesson

We ran a station teaching class for the 5th lesson in this unit. Got another new co-teacher so again, full lesson plans were made.

As such, I've attached it below as well as all the materials in case anyone else wants to have a crack at this one. The full lesson requires a significant amount of setup (moving desks). Alternately, if you don't want to run a dedicated skills lesson, any of these activities can be picked apart and used to fill a 10-15 minute slot and supplement the speaking or reading/writing lessons. The Korean on the instructions was penned by one of my colleagues so should be error-free.

Regarding feedback, this iteration of the formula went very well. I stressed volume control to the students at the start, and they respected it (this particular group really has the "too cool for school" attitude but seems to respond well to responsibility). One student still insisted on smashing the table signs though, sigh. For the Charades, I printed the guessers a copy of the normal cards page for reference (ie a cheat sheet) but not for the challenge cards. I then mounted the normal cards on blue backings and challnge on yellow. If you change these colours, be sure to edit the instructions accordingly. The Running Dictation students have a bit of trouble understanding what Student #1 is meant to do, so be proactive in "collecting" them and guiding them to wherever it is you choose to seat yourself. Seven sentences seemed pretty spot on for my students level and the time allotted. One team always nailed the full 21 points within a minute of time running out.

My co teacher likes to do reviews every two lessons, so I made an Invader Zim review game for lessons 5 & 6. It includes speaking, reading, and writing.  The icons on the upper right corner indicate what type of question/answer it is.

Please keep all files together. Included are fonts, sounds, and two small clips.

The wav files are not named correctly. The file titled "Slide 1" is actually for slide 2, and so on.

There is also a problem with the numbers appearing again, after clicking on certain questions. I'm sorry I don't know how to fix it!! T_T

Speaking class, Reading Class, and Writing Class

Speaking

Dice partner game (10)
  • PPT is on TV screen to show students which phrases to use depending on the number the roll on their dice.
  • One student rolls the dice first and says the question related to that number
  • Then, their partner rolls the dice. If they get an odd number they reply “Sure, you can.” and their partner gets a point.
  • If the partner rolls an even number they reply “Sorry, you can’t” and they don’t get a point.

Card on back game (10)
  • Using the cards from the back of the book, teachers tape a card to each of the students’ backs (without them knowing what the card is)
  • Students walk around and do RPS with a friend
  • Winner asks one of the six “Can I…” questions from the previous game that are still on the board.
  • The loser looks at the students back, to see if the winner guessed correctly. If they didn’t, the loser says “Sorry, you can’t” and they both go find another friend
  • If they guessed correctly, the loser says “Sure, you can” and the winner goes back to their desk.
  • Group with all students sitting, fastest wins.

GHOST ppt game (15)
  • Game that students play in groups
  • They will need a paper and pencil to write down ideas
  • The rest of the directions are on the PPT

Reading

Review (5)
  • Start with blanks on the board to represent the key expressions
  • Ask students to help you fill in the blanks to complete the key expressions

Reading Domino (10)
  • All the students in the class get an answer and a question
  • Someone reads their question and the person with the corresponding answer reads their answer and the question that follows
  • This chain continues until everyone in the class has read their paper.
  • Teachers time the class and they are able to read two times. Once for practice and once for real.
  • Students get plus seconds for discouraging their friends (BBALI BBALIIIII!) and they get minus seconds for encouraging them (THAT'S OKAY! GREAT JOB EVERYONE!). ((I know it's a bit cheesy and forced but it does help my not so great readers feel more confident and comfortable.))

Charades (15)
  • A group comes to the front of the class and three students sit in chairs facing away from the TV screen
  • One student from the group can see the TV screen.
  • A “Can I…” question is displayed on the TV and the standing student has to act out the expression while the three sitting down guess.
  • When they get the expression right, they should roatate seats.
  • They are allowed to skip but they have to try first
  • I would recommend not keeping score. The students will still have fun with the game but won’t get all hyped up and negative because of the fairness factor.

Writing

Review (10)
  • In their english journals, students should write the Key expressions exactly.
  • If they write them correctly, they get a stamp
  • Review together, and students who couldn’t remember expressions should write them in their journal

Walk and talk with checklist (10)
  • Students walk around with a checklist with different “Can I…” requests on it.
  • They find a student and do RPS. The winner asks one of the "Can I" questions on the checklist.
  • They do rock paper scissors again. If the winner wins again, the loser says “Sure you can!” and the winner gets to check off the request on their checklist
  • If they lose, the loser says, “Sorry you can’t” and they do not get to check the request off their checklist.
  • Basically, they have to win RPS twice to check something off

Unscramble the sentences (15)
  • In pairs, students are given sentences that have been printed in different colored pieces of paper.
  • Three different colors per bag and 2 different sets of bags
  • In pairs, students put the words in the correct order and then write them in their journals.
  • After they are done, they get a stamp and get the second set of sentences.
  • I think this was posted by another user but can't remember, sorry!

Introduce “Can you”
Remind them of what it means when you ask “Can you...?”
Do a little Simon says game of “Can you” to dismiss them.

Stations class

The 4th or 5th class of each lesson is my "Stations" class. In their end of the year survey last year, my students said they felt the least confident in writing. The stations heavily rely on writing. I really like stations because they get the kids up and moving, and also allow students to complete the activities at their own pace.

Students complete the stations individually. They are given a creative project at the end of stations so that the high level students that finish quickly can work on something instead of bothering the other students.

Before stations: “Can I” group pass game
Set up
  • Teachers start by asking students to brainstorm verbs and nouns
  • They create a list on the board of both.
How to play
  • Each student has a worksheet.
  • They write a noun and a verb on the top line only, then they fold that sentence back and pass to the next person in their group
  • The next student writes a verb and noun on the next line and folds it again.
  • At the end students unfold the paper to see their funny sentences.
Art project idea
  • Cut up the different “Can I…” sentences and put them in a bucket for students to draw out of.
  • Each student should draw a silly sentence, write the sentence on their paper and draw a picture to represent what’s happening in the sentence.
  • Put up the best art pieces in the room and those students can get two stamps next class

Stations
  • Station 1: Students are given lyrics to a song with some of the words missing. Students should follow the lyrics in the song and write the missing lyrics on their paper.
  • Station 2: Students write different answers (These answers are provided at the station.)  to the question “Can I…?” in a 3x4 table. Teachers give a “secret combination” of negative vs positive boxes to see if any of the students’ tables match.
  • Station 3: Students translate from English to Korean
  • Station 4: Students read the text conversation example at the station and make a text conversation of their own on their worksheet.

Hey! So I changed a game from my 5th grade chapter to suit this chapter.

This is a board game. Originally for speaking, I adapted it so include some reading.

Soccer R,P,S     - - PAIR GAME - -
How to play:
1) each student does RPS. Winner goes first.
2) Starting at number 1, Winner says/reads the sentence that matches the image. Other student says "Sure you can!"
3) Repeat. If the first student wins again, they are now on number 2.  If the other student wins, they can read their number 1.
4) Play until one student "scores a goal"
5) Then the students start from the middle again.
WINNER:  Whoever scores the most goals in the time limit provided.

I highly recommend laminating this board game.
