Reading: Power rangers Tiles game

Students choose a color and a word and read it. Click on that tile to reveal the point.

You can edit the words as you please.

I have a group of boys so I changed the topics to something they'll find more interesting. Simply print out the slides in the back of the ppt.

Also, I have a worksheet that students can use to measure each other's height and various body parts. You'll need some time of tape measure.

1) Guess the height of the K-Pop stars, fine for any period. I didn't have time to make it big/long so I'll use it as a warmup. Sit down elimination or points-based writing (or ...?).
2) Fling the Teacher. A series of multiple choice questions for reading/grammar practice. This game requires Flash (Adobe).

This game is similar to Battleship. Everyone draws 10 "Jolamen" (stick figures) on their game boards.

Whole class game: choose two students to stand up. One says a word, for example: centimeter and the other student an alphabet letter, for example “A”. All students check if they have a Jolaman in block (A1) and cross it out. Also cross out that box if you don’t have one. Students with a Jolaman in that box now only have 9 Jolamen left.

OR Group game: 2 students in each team (4 in group). Team 1:S1 says the word. S2 says the alphabet letter. Team 2 checks if they have a Jolaman in that specific block.

That block is then crossed out and anyone with a "Jolaman" at that spot now only has 9 men left. Continue until someone loses all of their men.

*Easy to change the pictures if you want

hot seat game -
one student from the team sits away from the tv and they have to guess what the picture is (guessed it right - 5 points)

other teams give hints to the the student that's guessing (give clues - 2 points)

or

they can pass on giving hints by saying "I don't know/I have no idea" (passing - 1 point)

this chapter is garbage. this textbook just seems to get worse and worse as it goes on. the title is "how tall are you?" and then it goes on to teach "do you know about ...?". WUT?! not only that but you have to teach the students words that are way too advanced for 6th grade, like 'observatory' and 'bay'. anyway.

here's a battleship game i edited to fit this chapter. it fits Period 3 (pp. 114-115) pretty much perfectly. Students must ask "Do you know about [person]? They are ____cm tall."

If they score a 'hit' instead of saying 'hit' the other student must say "Yes, (s)he's my friend." If they get a 'miss', the other student must say "No, I don't know him/her."

also edited a PPT explaining how to play the game. thanks to the original creators of this material, can't remember who you are or where i got this stuff from though!

EDIT: i've uploaded new versions of the materials, noticed there were a few mistakes in the originals. also cut out 1 slide from the explanation because it explains the same thing as the next slide, so i think it's redundant and the explanation was taking too long.

This lesson is terrible!

Here are a couple of power points I made for this lesson. P3 includes Ben1981's Kpop star heights.

And I modified a pyramid game to give the students practice at saying heights.

I also modified a ppt showing how to play line bingo to match this lesson and to match the way I play that game too.

I also made a worksheet for them to measure parts of their body as homework and then do a survey about it in class.

can you explain the pyramid game.. the powerpoint isn't really that clear.

i second that.... all i'm getting is that they role the dice and depending on the number, they get to move up a level or not? also depending on if they say the height correctly? is this played in pairs though? i can't really see how this works as a class...

The pyramid game is played in groups. Each group gets 1 paper and a dice.

The group asks "how tall are you?" and a student chooses where they want to move and answers with "I am ... cm tall". Then they roll the dice and if they roll a high enough number on the dice they can move up. They can choose to move to where another student already is and that is when a dice battle happens. The students will enjoy knocking other students back down to the start with a dice battle.

I never require the students to say it correctly in order to move, else the good students refuse to help the poorer ones. So they just have to speak and if they don't know the other members of their group have to help them.

I haven't tried this game yet so I don't know if it will work, I modified a game someone posted for teaching jobs.

Very simple multiple choice game (adapted from a template - thanks to the creator).
Students have to answer the question "Do you know about..?"
One slide has the SA flag - many of my students didn't recognize the flag even though they know I'm from South Africa. Change the names on the answers on the Shakespeare slide, they'll find it funny if it's your own name.

Not entirely related to this unit, but my kids still have trouble with -teen and -ty (sixteen and sixty). So I made this simple game to practise. Move the desks and have the students stand. Say one of the two numbers on screen and have students walk to whichever side of the room matches the number you say (can choose either). Rinse and repeat with a large silly number thrown in at the end for fun.

If they're lazy or naughty, they can just raise their hands instead of walking around the room/

Is anyone else going to correct the 'science' in story 1? A shooting star is not a falling star, obviously. I'm about to start this lesson and so I'm thinking about giving them some more accurate information. Any bright ideas? Oh, sure, you could say 'they're just kids, it doesn't hurt them, and besides, this is English class, not science class!". You could say that... but please don't.

Good point especially since falling star and shooting star both mean the same thing and that is not a star at all!

I concur. Ranks up there with the grade 5 lesson "What a Beautiful Palace!" from the 2012 YBM book LOL.

Anyways, here's what I got for this lesson. As usual be sure to check this post every now & again as I'll be editing it if/when I make more ppt's for the later parts of the lesson.

Sleeping Elephants game: Instructions included on the PPT, I always play sleeping elephants as a reading game but it can easily be used as a writing game too. (Ideal for the fourth or fifth period)

Blazing Pens game: Is there anyone who doesn't know how to play blazing pens???
