*****UPDATED FOR 2016*****

Hmm...seems like the title of the thread is mislabeled as Grade 5 when it should in fact be Grade 6 but at least it links correctly from the text book index page.

Anyways, here's my stuff. As usual if/when I make more ppt's I'll edit this post & attach them here. Happy teaching!

Intro: Pretty self explanatory. Get your co-t to double check the Korean expressions, mine was in a bit of a rush this morning & I already fixed 1 mistake with my limited Korean knowledge. (Ideal for the first period)

Slap game: Divide the class into two teams, 2 students come up to the front and have their back facing the TV screen with fly swatters. Everyone asks me "How can I get there?" I answer "You can take ____." Both students then turn around & the first person to slap the correct mode of transportation on the TV using the fly swatter gets a point for their team. (Ideal for the first period)

Period 2 Intro: Added some extra slides to review the key expressions. There's also some hidden slides to introduce the new expression "Where is the ____?" for Period 3 as I plan to use the same intro for that period too. (Ideal for the second & third period)

Minesweeper grid game: Split the class up into two or more teams. Pairs from each team will then take turns asking & answering "Where is the ____?" Click the corresponding box to win or lose points. (Ideal for the third period)

Sparkle Die game: Instructions included in the PPT. I played this game a few times last year with the old book but had completely forgotten about it up until now, the kids go bonkers over this game! (Ideal for the fourth period)

Mission: Impossible Running Dictation game: A hybrid running dictation / 4 corners game played with white boards. Instructions included in the PPT. (Ideal for the fifth period)

Space themed Connect 4 game:

2 teams: Say an expression: "How can I get to the library/park/museum etc.?"; "You can take a taxi/subway/bus/walk etc."

Click on that block and click on the color of that team.
They have to get 4 in a row to get a point.

This is our lesson for period 1. It uses the listen abd do board from page 163, but slightly expanded. We added coffee shop and walk. Also I chose the sentences. ^.^
Hope it helps.

this thread is a bit thin so far, so here is some stuff i used.

a survey - good for any speaking part.

a worksheet- good for writing (period 5), but i guess you could use it anywhere. The last section is in there because I noticed by students were struggling a lot with incorrectly putting a 'the' before things, so it's a bit of practice. For Question 3 of that section, I just wrote in the name of some generic, made-up elementary school, but you can change it to your own school name if you want.

Also, I got this excellent writing activity from another thread. Can't remember who made it, but it's great! I actually only gave 4 of the slides to my students. Printed 2 slides per page, and printed back-to-back so it fits on 1 page. After they were done writing their directions, i got students to swap sheets with their partner, and their partner had to read the directions and draw out the route on the little map on the right. it worked great!

1) Evolution speaking game. Thanks to original creator. If your students don't already know how to play this game, move slide 6 to the end. This slide shows the dialogues they should use at the various levels. (Eg "How can I get to the ___" ... "Take bus number __" OR "Go straight and turn ___")

2) I'll just re-use the writing activity I use for gr5's similar chapter. Instructions below.
"Here's a low-prep writing activity that my students enjoyed. You could use a handout, online map, or powerpoint, but I just drew the attached picture on the board before class instead.

The magnets represent treasure. On the back of the magnets, I wrote a number (1, 2 or 3) with a board marker representing how much that treasure is worth. Students race in groups to get the treasure by writing directions to it, taking turns as writers and following the textbook writing format. Students can aim for any treasure, but must write on top of their whiteboards the number they are targeting. When they finish they put up their hands. The teacher(s) check and if the directions are correct, give that group the magnet (only one team gets each treasure). When all treasure has been claimed, they add up the points on the magnets to see who has the most.

Including explanation, this took about 15 mins. They go crazy when another team beats them to a treasure, which makes it pretty fun :)"

Direction Board Game and Map-

(I went over the New Expressions PowerPoint before starting the game)

This game takes about 15 minutes to explain and do.

My students are pretty low level and very unmotivated, but this worked great for them and got them excited and competitive.

I had the students play in a group of 3 or 4, play rock, paper, scissors to see who goes first, then roll a die.  If they land on a preposition, they have to look at their map and say a sentence with the word.  For example, if they land on the word "near", they could say "The zoo is near the school".  There are also the store names, so for example if they land on the "Chocolate shop", they could say "The chocolate shop is behind the ice cream shop".

I tried to encourage them to use all the different vocabulary since technically they could use "near" for just about everything, but most of the time they did it without my insistence.

I put this kaboom game in for the 5th grade book, I also made a 6th grade version.

The 5th grade one was the first one I made, so it had a lot of mistakes I missed at first (which have all been corrected!)...so far I have done this with 6th grade and we have found no mistakes (yay!).

Basically, print out the sentences and the kabooms and cut them out (I also laminate first because I have to use this with nine classes). I make six copies because we have six teams in each class.  Put the sentences and the kabooms into a bag (we have blue pouches with red questions marks on them) and give each team a bag. The team members take turns drawing a strip of paper.  If they get a sentence they all must write the sentence on their worksheets, if they get a kaboom they must start spelling kaboom.  The team with the least amount of kabooms is the winner!  It is easy to play, just a lot of prep.

After we check the answers on the PPT.  NOTE: Some people may not care for how I made the PPT, of course you can change it!

Update I make a word puzzle for the back of the Kaboom game. It's on the new kaboomwksh attachment. I am not going to use it until next week, but I checked it for mistakes and it seems ok.

If you find a mistake, please tell me. Thanks.

This is a listening game I made for Story Pot. Students sit around a table with some kind of token in the middle (I have miniature toy dragons so that's what I used). When the sentence is displayed on the TV, the teacher will either read the sentence correctly or incorrectly. If it's correct, the students will race to grab the token first to get a point.

My 6th graders find this chapter super easy and the book is really quick so I gave them an activity.

They have to go around school and write directions to a location of their choice (keep it a secret, if they can). Each type of transportation means something different. For example: take bus number 7 means take 7 BIG steps.

This gets them out of the classroom, writing and having some fun. Mine really had a great time making up crazy directions.

Is this thread for grade 5 or grade 6? I keep thinking I've clicked on the wrong link.  Anyhow, for grade 6

A writing worksheet.  Can be done as a team activity or individual or even as homework.  Using Seoul subway maps, students write the directions of how to get to certain stations using the key phrases: get on, get off, transfer to etc.

Here's what we did. Sorry there are so many things. we really went to town on this lesson, focusing more on prepositions and giving other kinds of directions, other than just "go straight and turn right."

Here's a dice game for period two.

1)students play rps
2) winner rolls the die and asks a question
3) loser rolls the die and answers.
4) the total from both dice rolls is the points that the winner gets
5) loser rolls and asks question
6) repeat.

I plan on having the students play until someone has 40-50 points.
