Grade 1 Chuseok English Town
« on: August 26, 2016, 01:17:21 PM »
Hi, I'm a new teacher and I'm just getting into the swing of things.

My co-teacher just informed me I have to think of a 3 hour lesson plan for Chuseok (because I'm British we can't include thanksgiving as she originally wanted me to introduce my culture)

I plan to spend the first period introducing myself and where I am from with a powerpoint presentation but otherwise am trying to find activities to do.

I've not taught grade 1 before but am aware they're very young and their English is very limited.
At the moment the only activity I have is Harvest prints, where the students will use cut up fruit and veg to stamp designs and pictures and some colouring sheets.

Anyone got any good ideas? Should I also present a chuseok powerpoint? (Feels like she has been thrown into the deep end!)

depending on the level you can go over colors while also talking about the different kinds of clothes and foods we eat during thanksgiving and chuseok. Or you can have students follow your directions and color each part the color you choose.
Older kids can maybe follow a simple recipe for some korean foods (you can find online) and they can translate what each ingredient is and how much to use.

I plan on doing a bit of a mix since my kids are low to high level. Hope this helps.

Maybe start with a "What does Chuseok mean to me?", and relate it back to similar holidays where you're from, talking in a little more depth on that, and then follow that with a section of the lesson that has them answer the question, what does Chuseok mean to the students.

This way you model how they can talk about it, and then they talk about their own holiday.

You can finish with having an activity like the above comment dealing with traditional foods or portions of Chuseok.

Hope that helps!
