Adele - Send My Love (Vocabulary and Singing lesson)
« on: September 10, 2016, 12:59:32 PM »
Hi everyone.  I want to thank some of the users on this board for providing me with great materials to help me survive and teach for the first few months since arriving here.  I want to show my gratitude to them and everyone else on this board for their efforts towards helping others achieve success and becoming good teachers in Korea.

I have a club activity class at my main school 2 times a week with my 1st graders.  I teach them for 90 minutes each day with a break in between.  My 1st grader's levels are very mixed, with some high level students, some low level students, and very low level (cannot read).  My co-teacher has helped me group the stronger students with some of the weaker students and I think this will help the weaker students gain some confidence especially if I continue to tidy up my lesson structures and delivery for a singing lesson like this one.

Here is the general lesson structure:

1.   Introduce the type of music (pop, rock, kpop, etc.)
2.   Introduce/teach new vocabulary and expressions with the vocabulary
3.   Play song 1st time (get students interested)
4.   Worksheet activity – Circle the Words You Hear
5.   Worksheet activity – Concept Check vocabulary (fill in the blank w/ word bank)
6.   Listening and Worksheet activity – Fill in the blanks along with what you hear (play verse, chorus etc.)
7.   Teach the song to students using disappearing lyrics PPT
8.   Time permitting – watch the music video

First, I briefly told them what we'd be doing today and introduced them to the Pop Song genre by letting them listen to part of Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' starting at 2:04  . Second, for this particular lesson I decided to hand out WKsht 2 first while they listened to the song the very first time.  Their focus is to circle the words they hear working alone; no watching the music video here.  Then I did a WCFB (whole class feedback) with everyone and wrote the correct answers on the board.  Third, I handed out WKsht 1 and had them work alone.  After these two you can choose to have them check their answers with a partner before going into WCFB or not.  Fourth, I handed out WKsht 3 and we listened to the 1st verse, chorus and the 2nd verse.  I had them work together for this section but maybe next time I will have them work alone.  I ended up playing each section of the song 3+ times and next time I will only allow a maximum of two times.  This part was painful for low levels but the song sounded interesting enough, they most of the time would move to the beat or not look like they are bored.

The next part we focused on learning only the Pre-chorus of the song:
I'm given you up
I've forgiven it all
You set me free

I did this because we were running out of time.  The original plan was to learn the 1st and second verses and the chorus which would be great for building the student's confidence.

This can be easily adapted for higher levels/grades by adding the final lyrics to the song in the disappearing lyrics section of the PPT which is used for helping them learn the song.  You could also have them work alone on all the work sheets.  You can add more fill in the blanks for worksheet 3.

If you want to use this lesson for a 45 minute lesson, it will probably be impossible for 1st and maybe most 2nd graders but 3rd graders would have a good chance at taking something away from the lesson.  I would suggest just don't bother with vocabulary.  If you do, teach 3-4 words and their marker sentences and just Concept Check your students by asking them questions instead of giving them a worksheet that would take up 5-8 minutes of lesson time.

Any feedback is appreciated.  This was more or less a success with my 1st graders.  I will teach them 'Hello' by Adele next week which will be easier and maybe I will have time to teach them the whole song.

EDIT: I will not take credit for the disappearing text portion of the PPT.  Another member made a fantastic template that fits incredibly well into, IMO, any song learning lesson.  Unfortunately, I don't remember the original post that had the template attached.

I'm given you up?

Is it a typo?

?? You're pop song is Adele or Daft Punk?

The PPT says Daft Punk - Get Lucky.  You're going to teach a bunch of kids a song about going out, picking up, and getting laid?  You don't think that's inappropriate for kids?
