Zelda Chest Game
« on: September 22, 2016, 10:51:07 AM »
Good Morning

I have been working on revising my first version of this game just a bit. I didn't post it in games before, so I think it belongs here.

Set up
(Suggested: Write rupee values on a sheet ahead of time if you aren't an avid Zelda player.)
Hand out the Word document sheet to each student.
Keep track of team points on the board in the classroom.
Explain "treasures" and rupee values to students before playing (on slide 2)
(Optional, for Ocarina, switch points with team via dice roll, works well when using 6 teams.)
Decide Order of teams to play.

Instructions
Have students say the color and word of the treasure chest they want to pick.
Have them find the corresponding phrase on the handout and read it out loud together.
(Optional, repeat the phrase. Have the class repeat. Ask for meaning of the phrase.)
Click the treasure chest.
Record the points

Recommended 3, 5, or 6 teams.
Estimated play time: 30 minutes.
Jesus explained, “I am the Way, I am the Truth, and I am the Life. No one comes next to the Father except through union with me. To know me is to know my Father too. And from now on you will realize that you have seen him and experienced him.” [John 14:6-7] TPT

Thaks for posting this, it saved my life today! haha

I changed up the rules a little, though, because I work at a high school (albeit a low-level high school). My students are not about paper and worksheets, even if it's just reading, haha.

So How I played it was they could make any sentence that they wanted and use as many chests as they could in that sentence (higher levels I limit to three chests per turn). points go up quickly this way so the"x2" and "x3" hearts I only apply to the other points they earn that turn.

The boys liked it (which is a huge victory in this high school)! The girls wanted to watch a drama so they only played for 20 minutes (which is what normally happens in this school!   >:( ) But I think my higher classes tomorrow will like it a lot more

Anyway thanks again for posting it!

The game looks good - I dig the sounds and the graphics.

I think one improvement that could/should be made is to show how many points each crystal gets you for different color on the main grid (this is something you've done for other icons, but the value of each crystal is missing for whichever reason) - or you can just use a number instead of crystals?

I like the idea of having background music in games - but I'm thinking that the music volume on the main grid should probably be lowered - since this is a reading game, you need to be able to hear what the students are saying.  Some students can be rather quiet.

Anyways, these are just mere suggestions - you may well come to the same conclusion after testing this game out in class.

PS.  Just tried the game and the 3rd graders loved the theme.  The points go pretty darn high - one team got 496 points.  I had to write on the white board the value of the different crystals - and the music was indeed a bit too loud (if you keep the volume low, the sound effects when revealing the prize are then too quiet).

Here is an updated version with the changes I've listed in the post above.

I hope you can make more similar games with different themes.

I'm thinking of making one or two games using the same format myself - If we can get five themes going, it would be awesome.

Some theme ideas?  Tomb Raider, Pokemon, Jurassic Park, Disney, etc.

Cheers

All very good points. I had noticed most of them before and I changed them, but forgot to upload the updated version, so thank you :D

My students really love the voice effects, so turning the volume down on the music was a good call.

I'm glad I could save you guys some stress, and make class a little more fun for the students. I remember in school the only ppt game I got to play was Jeopardy, like 500 times.

Have a good week teaching :)

Yo - I am gonna use this game for my demo, since the game I originally made for that class proved to be too hard (it turns out, some students can't read - so I got to mask the problem via a 'group' game).

To that end, I gave this game a bit of the 'Maximus' treatment.

I replaced all of the icons with animated gifs - replaced some of the prizes with something else entirely and created an additional one to top things off.  I've also added a few more gifs - you'll see what I mean.

Oh, and apparently my version is now 5 mb smaller than yours - funny how that works.

Enjoy.

PS.  I forgot to replace the 'destroy 1/2 of team's points' on the game screen - so whoever uses this, edit that text before playing - or leave it as is, it's up to you.  Cheers.

And here is the fixed version -
to top things off, I've decided to replace one of the 'double points' with triple - so that there are now 4 double and 2 triple point icons.
And I've also replaced the 'give 30 points to another team' and the 'rock paper scissors' gifs with something else.

Cheers.

Maximmm, seriously fantastic work. Wow. Thank you so much :D

You definitely added a whole new dimension to this game and I'm excited to play. Makes me wish we had stuff like this back when I was a student.

Anyway, just awesome!
