Upcycling/DIY Camp
« on: October 31, 2016, 02:36:10 PM »
Did this Upcycling summer camp with 5th graders (4 boys/4 girls). It was a 5 Day camp (4 hours per day). We talked about the difference between recycling and upcycling. Showed them examples of each including some stuff that I've upcycled at home. (Mini show and tell)

Upcycling Projects:

1. Toilet Tissue Roll Race Cars: I cut out the top for students once they were done painting.

2. No Sew T-shirt Tote Bags: My co-teacher donated some tshirts. Some students brought their own old tshirts.

3. Juice Box Birdfeeders: I washed and saved a bunch of juice and soy milk containers. My co-teachers cut the boxes in advance. Of course, students were not permitted to use box cutters. The birdseed I got from LotteMart. Due to time constraints that day the students got a ziploc bag of seeds each and took their birdfeeders home. (If we had time we would have hung them up in trees. In retrospect, perhaps we should have done this on Day 1 so we could test them out. I think we finished them on the last day or two of camp.)

4. Soda Tab Accessories: Saved the tabs from Trevi sparkling water (I buy them by the case from Gmarket) as well as other tabs I could get my hands on - We bought leather-like string and Carabiner keyrings from Daiso

DIY projects:

1. Glitter pencils - I got mod podge from the local art store

2. Kool-Aid Lip Gloss - We used iced tea packets. Vanilla extract was also an option. We used petroleum jelly but you can also use coconut oil. Tons of options on Pinterest, youtube etc  https://youtu.be/ebj2ra7Fz1s

--- We also practiced writing their names in English:
1. Color-by-Number Names - http://royalbaloo.com/color-by-number-names/

2. Custom Name Tracing Printables: http://custom.powerfulmothering.com/custom_name_sheet.php
3. Students wrote their names on the board in English at the start of camp (every morning)
