Sonic Word Lotto
« on: December 04, 2016, 10:55:14 PM »
I've spent far too many hours on a game that's not even very intricate. It's just a nice Word Lotto game with a fresh Sonic take. The rules are included and it should be pretty simple to figure out. Just plug in your words, print the blank sheets, and have fun.

The first 6 rounds are normal, and have explained point values. Rounds 7-10 are Super Sonic, the music changes and the points are left up to a dice roll. I intentionally made the delay on rounds 7-10 get longer and longer. So just click once, and wait for it...

The students go crazy (in a good way) on round 10, when you click and it takes 5 full seconds to see which of the 2 remaining sentences will remain.

The intro video is a link to the Sonic Unleashed intro, which is one of my favorite game intros. It can be skipped, but my students seemed to really enjoy it, I know yours will too.

Estimated Play Time: 30 Minutes
Single Player Game

The video is now embedded - though seriously, a 6 minute intro?  I try to limit those to one minute (it doesn't always work out), though a six minute video might be cool for after school.  The intro video slide has a skip button.

Furthermore, I've added a 'ring' sound effect to the disappearing animations.

Cheers.
Don't let it consume you.

Haha, yeah. It's a really long intro video. I just threw it in there because I know camps are coming up, and it's nice to have the game take up a whole 40 minutes.

Thank you for the improvement. Two heads are better than one :)

I've not played a Word Lotto game before so I think I'm being really dense!

How do you play?

Do they just write down any three and if it's the same as the ones left they get points?

How does this work with a large group? Do you just trust that they won't cheat and let them mark their own?

Also one last question, how long does this usually take? (excluding the video).

My third graders have such a low level and it's like pulling teeth teaching them so I'm looking for longer games to try and fill some lessons and keep them awake haha

All are very good questions.

The first 6 rounds have the students write 3 words. I usually read the words outloud and have them repeat all 9 words either before or after they had written their 3 choices.

My points are set up as 1 for 1 match, 3 for 2 matches, and 5 if they match all 3. You can adjust it if you want, but that worked well for me. I have them circle the answers that match and tally their own points (I walk around to check a few students each time, especially in the first couple rounds to make sure they have their points correct.)

Rounds 7-10 have 3 sentences, and they need to just write one. For those who match the correct sentence. Then roll a die for points. I used a big fluffy one so all the students could watch.

At the end, you can help students add up their points, and I gave candy to the top 5 personally.

I like word lotto a lot because it is a 30 minute writing activity, and even keeps younger students entertained for an abnormally long time, and it's super easy to modify. Each time I played it came in 25-30 or so minutes.

I hope that helps. Don't forget to turn your sound on, the songs and maximmm's added coin effects make this much more interactive and fun :D

Ah great :) Thanks so much for answering!

Just checking I got the gist right :)

Sounds simple enough and anything that involves competition/candy seems to work well with my students! :)

thanks very much :)
