Sherlock in middle school
« on: December 09, 2016, 01:03:08 PM »
Hi guys, I'm camp planning here and I wanted to see if others have experienced watching BBC's Sherlock with their students.

I have used it with 3rd grade students in the past. They were advanced, though. So, I'm not sure how it would go over at different levels?

Has anyone watched it with 1st or 2nd grade students?

Other drama recommendations are welcomed too. However, I would prefer to use something I am familiar with, which is why I'd like Sherlock.

I've had students who were fans of the series, but I personally wouldn't show it in class.

It is strongly implied that a woman gave a man a BJ in the first episode, plus drug use by Sherlock himself, murder.

Not that I have a problem with any of those things myself, or think they're something a ~14 year old couldn't handle (I watched Pulp Fiction when I was 13) just kinda inappropriate for a teacher to show their students, especially in Korea, IMO.

Good point. It's been a struggle for me. I would prefer to show something dramatic rather than comedy, and it's been difficult to find any clean drama that would actually be interesting.

I did a Sherlock camp over the Summer.

I used the YBM series Sherlock book and used 1 story out of the book, we read it over 5 days, and we watched 2 episodes of the Sherlock series using heyheyfriends.com so it was subtitled in Korean. We had supplementary activities to go with it, all summed up in a workbook that I created.

It is entirely possible to use Sherlock, just don't expect the 'fan-girl/boy' aspect that many westerners might give. It's something different for many students, although some are starting to get into it. And don't be surprised if they start singing the K-pop song Sherlock when they first hear the topic.

Teach this to your students... they'll thank you for it later!

When I taught middle school I had a ct who would show Sherlock to the 3rd grade.  When I asked her about it, she said the only one she skipped was the first ep of the second season because of the nudity.  She seemed to have no problem with anything else.

I'm neither encouraging or discouraging showing it to 3rd graders - I'm just citing a precedence.  I see the point BTeacher makes, but when you consider all the movies and games and such they can watch, Sherlock is by no means the worst or most confronting.  Of course, something can be said about not letting them watch those movies etc in the first place.

My middle school girls DEFINITELY fan girl over Sherlock.

I come into my class and they either ask me if I know Benedict Cumberbatch personally or they've written his name all over the board with love hearts haha

I'm definitely considering doing a Sherlock themed winter camp.

Or maybe a Mystery theme with some Sherlock.

I showed an episode of Sherlock in one of my after-school classes with 1st and 2nd graders. It went over fine, though there are definitely other shows they would find more interesting.

I showed the episode "The Great Game." Here's a Sherlock-themed bomb game I put together to go with it in case anyone wants it. Make sure to pre-teach some of the mystery/crime related vocab beforehand.
