finally, a writing game

Red = hard, Green = easy (with numbers)

I've made speed charades, speed reading and speed speaking games using this template (intro slide, anyways) - this is the final edition using this template - speed writing.

To edit this game, just edit the text below each slide - the text is purposely placed above the replica covering cards to help you determine whether or not each letter will be fully covered during the game.

There are 2 speeds - fast and slow.

I must say, making this game was a rather tedious job - the first two letter reveals show 2 letters on each line, but the third reveal cycle shows only one, because I got bored doing the same thing.  As such, each letter is revealed 5 times when playing in fast game mode and 4 times (or 5 in some cases) when playing in slow game mode.

To go back to the main menu, click on the icon in the right bottom corner.

Oh yeah - for low level students, write 2-4 words, and for high level students, write full sentences.

Cheers.

There was an error where one card would remain closed in the fast game mode and one extra card would remain open in the slow game mode - that has now been fixed.  The file link in the post above has been updated.

Let's see how well it all works on school computers....   :undecided:

So, I tried this game today with one class (4th grade - not super advanced).

Only one student got one word (out of 3) correct in each round (we did 2 rounds, 3 words in each round), everyone else got zero.  Upon seeing their white boards, I realized that they had no idea what to do at all.  One student just wrote letters all over the place.  Other students were hoping to guess what the words were by trying to watch the game without writing each letter - that was a big fail.

It would appear that you have to teach your students the basic strategy used with this game - where they have to initially prepare their white boards/paper by drawing two lines with 16 spaces for each letter and then work from there.

I'll give it a shot tomorrow - and if that doesn't work, some further modifications may be necessary.  All in all, students are not used to such speed when it comes to writing - they are used to 'drawing' letters - so this was a bit of shock to them.  At the same time, it's a good thing when students are shocked - it wakes them up, but it can also be bad if they keep failing.

I'm now thinking that I should test this out with my co-teachers first - see if they manage to cope with this speed.  In theory, students should be able to write down at least half of the letters - hopefully in the right places and then fill in the blanks based on what they know.

If you have any other ideas, let me know ;)

PS.  I added a worksheet at the end of the ppt file - I don't think it's necessary once you explain to students the basic game strategy, but it's there just in case.

Made another modification - added numbers next to the covering cards.  One of the obstacles when playing this game is figuring out where the letters go, students are bound to spend too much time counting the boxes which would slow down their writing progress and make it easy to make a mistake.  These numbers should help, if students prep their whiteboards/papers correctly.

PS.  I've decided to keep both the numbered and the unnumbered templates and combine them into one - I think the unnumbered slides would work better with 5th and 6th grade students - the idea is not to just fill-in the blanks once the 2 minutes are up, but also to correct any mistakes or unscramble words, if you do end up with a scrambled word.

With numbers, the possibility of a word being scrambled is non-existent.  With low-level students though, numbered slides are probably a better option.

Cheers.

The numbered template went over with 3rd and 4th grade students extremely well - it was challenging and fun at the same time.   I'd say that you can use the unnumbered slides with low level students as well, after they've gotten used to the numbered system -it works as an added challenge, by leading to the 'scrambled words' scenarios.

All in all, I like to think that this is the best writing game template on this site.

Next, I intend to make an interactive game - again, it should be fairly unique due to a certain twist.

Cheers.

This game is indeed quite challenging. I made some writing box sheets to go with it, so the students can fill them in. Great job, I can tell you put a lot of effort in and it came out very well and unique. I can say I do not think I've seen a game like this before and it will come in handy.
Jesus explained, “I am the Way, I am the Truth, and I am the Life. No one comes next to the Father except through union with me. To know me is to know my Father too. And from now on you will realize that you have seen him and experienced him.” [John 14:6-7] TPT

This looks cool...but I don't get it.

Is the goal for the student's to write down the letters as quickly as possible to be the winner, or winning team?

I just started clicking and eventually there was some action. Other than that, I wasn't sure how the same started.

The goal is to write down as many letters as they can and complete the sentence either before or after the card flipping sequence is completed.

Every student needs to have a whiteboard or a worksheet (last slide of the ppt) - this game is not designed to be played in teams.
