English Project Ideas
« on: December 23, 2016, 10:44:54 AM »
So my school is trying to justify keeping their native English teacher next year, and as a result, our principal wants to see something tangible from our English department.

I would appreciate any ideas that you might have of past projects that you have done, or that others have done at their schools with their native teachers and students.

So far my school hosts a singing contest in English, and I want to start a school newspaper next year, But I would like to hear other ideas if you have any because I'm not sure this will be enough.  Thanks.

I've been wanting to set up a cooking class (this would be pretty difficult) and also a kind of film club.
We'd watch a movie then discuss it, talk about it, write about it.
Do you do camp in the holidays? That's great fun.

Maybe a combination of the things you mentioned along with other projects like a spelling bee, essay/speech/trivia/video contest, English yearbook, or weekly English news broadcast.

Newspaper/magazine can be good if you can keep the kids focused - I tried it for an after school activity but they just copied and pasted from naver and wrote about EXO - it didn't go well.  You could try for a regular output if the school will allow you to print it, and send one to each homeroom.  Get them to write and take photos about themselves and the school. Topics school activities, photos and comments (upcoming and recent), reviews of the lunch menu, profiles or interviews with teachers and students.  Don't let them write about their fav k-pop, it's done to death.

Same with a movie - try to give them some strict parameters.  My grade 6 girls did a short film about school bullying, which was great as I didn't prompt them to do it - so you can do topics relevant to school life - the principal might appreciate it. Get your CT to make some Korean subtitles for the other classes to watch and enjoy during homeroom.

For one of my camps (middle school) I've had the students make short films; I could see this being a project during the year if you see them consistently enough. Depending on the grade level, you could set up more parameters/give more direction-- I found that the older students, grade 3s, took the project and ran with it while the younger students (grades 1 and 2) struggled a little more coming up with an idea from scratch. This is just my experience though.

Grade 3s: one group did a zombie flick and another did an action short.
Grade 2s & 1s: more slice of life type ideas-- both involved being late to school, one was "just a dream."

Some people also do commercials and I thought the one I saw turned out well. I might do commercials and/or movie trailers for one of my future camps.

Thanks for the awesome ideas everyone!  I really love the movie/video ideas.  These would be exactly what the principal is looking for in order to show off our school to prospective students!

I definitely have a plan to assign certain topics for the videos and news articles, but motivation will definitely be the biggest obstacle.  I will probably have to do a lot of heavy editing and work myself, but it'll be worth it if the principal is satisfied.
